Ha Ha Ha, I dont think so... If memory serves me correctly, I dont think any Linux Distro could be as bad as any Windows, in that regard
Besides, I can always do what I did in Windows, get a firewall, and close all the ports back down. Heck, it works that way in Windows... Nice thing about a good firewall, it makes up for the inadaquacies of security in your OS, huh ? ( true, it is a "band-aide" solution, and the OS should "really" do it itself, but, ... )
While I got ya on the phone, so to speak, after I install, my "usual" things to do are: apt-get update, install what I want through apt-get install ( games and stuff ), and then, since Kanotix is "able" to do this, should I go for the "upgrade" or should I do a "dist-upgrade" at that point ? ( this was a big "no no" in Knoppix )
I guess with Kanotix, I shouldn't be "affraid" of these commands anymore, right???

Wonder why it's taking so long to copy files onto the laptop?
It seems to be quite fast until 95% or so then it 'seems' to slow to a crawl but in fact the progress bar is lying to you. They're working on it.
It finally made it, took about two hours. I think it's more than a bug in the installer in this case, I think it's a heating problem with the laptop. The batteries have given up so it's always running from AC which heats it up & I think causes the CD drive to quit. Seemed to speed up when I propped it up so it could dissipate more heat.
I stalled for a time at 35% then again at 88% with no Cd action and no HD action.

Hmm not that I know of unless Nishtya is really the leader of a M$ conspiracy to install a corrupted Linux distro with all ports opened by default then claim "See we told you windows was more secure."
?? What's this about?

CTRL+ALT+F1
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
Do not fear the upgrade!

Well Kanotix has ACPI (Knoppix does not) and perhaps your BIOS is a bit buggy. I would not use ACPI until I knew what was causing it to heat up so.

Computer is about 5 years & does not have acpi. Heating is caused by the battery continually trying to charge. Battery has developed a 'memory' so it only has about 10% of its capacity.

Will the laptop still run it you pull the battery while plugged in (mine does)? Maybe it will solve your heating issues, since the battery isn't providing functionality anyway. While you're at it, why not duct tape a freezy-pack in the battery well and see if you can overclock.

Awww, c'mon! Was it that easy???
Actually, I've seen some stuff on TSS that was no less silly.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that Knoppix has had ACPI support for some time now. I seem to recall using it even quite a while back. I only remember because my computer won't shut down properly without ACPI.
But Kanotix is definitely the way to go for a hd-install if you refuse to install Debian or Ubuntu (which I'm really getting to like more and more...and highly recommend).
