split files in knoppix
My computer (winxp) crashed and I am trying to get some very important files off of it. My question is there a way to compress and spilt files while running knoppix. This way I can take them over to another computer one piece at a time via USB flash memory then recombine the file on another winxp computer. I have a fat32 partition on the crashed computer that I can save files to. If I can’t spilt the files is there a way to network a windows xp computer to access and download the files from the computer running knopppix.
Any help would be most appreciated
thanks

as for splitting, split in a console should do it nicely. man split for more.
here is how to split the file to chunks slightly less than 100Mb in size
Code:
split -b 100m /file/to/be/split /home/knoppix/splitfile
then unmount the disk remove disk put file on other computer and go back and do it all again
just make certain that you have enought room to store the split file, as knoppix home is a ramdisk or the usbpen...
YOU HAVE TROUBLE not much sence in splitting a file that can't fit on the place it gets split to...
Here is link to one way to transfer the files over network,

another is to start sshd on knoppix and use putty or winscp to copy the files to an Windows computer.
starting sshd can be done with the penguin.menu-->network iirc.
putty you find here http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/
