i deleted the orgional package install of mysql and reinstalled with kpackage mangager after i ran apt-get update, so now i have mysql 5 but i am still not able to start the mysql server. mysql cannot find the socket and mysql still seems to be incompleteOriginally Posted by hunkychop

You probably have just the MySQL-Client... not the MySQL-Server. You need to apt-get that file (and the dependancies) or use synaptic to get them. I am using the "testing" versions of all the .deb files, so it naturally updated the MySQL-Client as well for me. Hope this helps.
