Soundcards and internal modems seem to be tricky under Linux. These two pages

    http://www.djcj.org/LAU/guide/Sound-HOWTO-3.html and
    http://www.mari.cz/howto/Sound-HOWTO.html#AEN120

list Linux-compatible soundcards, but they are probably not complete. I don't see yours on the lists, but that is not to say there is not a way.

I had a Rockwell PCI modem/soundcard in my system that I finally just had to replace (with a Soundblaster) to have sound. That might be what you have to do. FWIW

Before doing any surgery like that, though, have you looked in Start>Settings>Control Center>Sound & Multimedia? It probably is *not* something set wrong in there, but you never know...

I just HAD to reply to this. Please be aware that AFAIK most sound cards work pretty well under Linux. Sure there are some that don't but the same is true of that other wannabe OS.

Internal modems are usually not modems but rather some rinky-dink cheapo piece of junk that relies on M$ to do all of the work for it. REAL modems work perfectly w/ Linux.

re:soundcards, let me rephrase then. Most of the total number of actual machines sold in the United States (where I live) have soundcards out of the box that are as likely not to work under Linux as they are to work. How's that?

re: PCI modems "usually not modems"...do they set baud rate, bitrate, parity, and all that good stuff? Do they, most importantly, modulate, and demodulate?

At any rate, more often than not, the easiest, most effective solution is just to get a tried and true soundcard. You can likely find a used Soundblaster for around five or ten bucks at an independent computer store. It might be a "Gordian knot" solution, but it works.

Ok I got and installed Sound Blaster Live, and now when Linux is loading up all the lines come flying down the screena dnt ehn it says "Kernel Panic: Init Not Found: Try to init" or something like that, any idea what the problem could be?
