Let's you manually load some needed modules that some hareware requires. These modules will then automatically start at boot.

[quote="kn2user"]Kppp, after running pppconfig, gives me this error and than closes:
Opener: received OpenDevice
error opening modem device !
Opener: received RemoveLock
I know about lspci -v but I do not understand the output fully because I am new to linux. Like how can you find out what ttyS# is for the port.
I want an output that says something like this:
Linux has detected these ports:
ttyS0 no hardware
ttyS1 modem found
Is there a command like this?
eon, you sayed that my modem is ttyS3 or ttyS4 how did you find this? In windows, my modem is on com2, which should be ttyS1 in linux. Should windows and linux have the modem on the same port or will it be different?
I will try pon and minicom tommorrow since I have a paper to write today.
rrfish72, what does the command modconf do? I am new to linux so what do I have to do to add a module. What module should I add?[/quote
]
I looked at one of my books, tried this on my system and it works "dmesg | grep ttyS*" Note the vertical line "|" is the "shifted/uppercase" symbol paired with the "\" the key and is located on a US keyboard above the enter key. and the astriek/star symbol is used, in linux as a wildcard.
You can also use this command to "see" serial ports "setserial -g /dev/ttyS*"
I guessed that your modem could be /dev/ttyS3 or 4 because AFAIK S0 & S1 are for external modems and they do correspond to com1 & com2 respectively.
Good luck !

Hi,
You might wan't to see if your modem is known to work under linux, check here: http://www.devidal.tv/~chris/winmodems/pci_list.html
In general pci modems are a pain, and I seem to remember that the HCF modems are especially so.
Good luck

I will try out the commands later today and I will post how it comes out tommorrow.
-
I tried the command pon and it did not work. It did not give me any output.
The minicom -s did not work either. When I ran it, it had set my modem to be on ttyS3. So I try to dial and it did not work. I changed my port to ttyS1 and nothing.
I could not figure out what to do with the modconf. I know it is for loading modules but I do not know what modules to load or even where to get modules.
Another person from another thread said that I should turn off some of the extra things that are loaded at boot so I will try that and see how it goes.
Edit:
One thing that I have notice which I am not sure if it is import is that ttyS1 is uart:unkown port: 0x02f8 irq: 3 and ttyS3 is uart:unkown port: 0x02e8 irq: 3.

If you are getting that "unknown" when you are executing one of the port commands I listed then you probably have a winmodem.
i.e. a controllerless modem that relies on the windows operating system to do some of the modems tasks.
There are ways to make winmodems work but it may not be the best approach.
What is the complete output from "setserial -g /dev/ttyS*" ? copy and paste here please.
-
Here is the result:
setserial -g /dev/ttyS*
/dev/ttyS0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
/dev/ttyS1, UART: unknown, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3
/dev/ttyS2, UART: unknown, Port: 0x03e8, IRQ: 4
/dev/ttyS3, UART: unknown, Port: 0x02e8, IRQ: 3
/dev/ttyS4, UART: unknown, Port: 0xffffffff, IRQ: 0
/dev/ttyS5, UART: unknown, Port: 0x01a0, IRQ: 2, Flags: Fourport
/dev/ttyS6, UART: unknown, Port: 0x01a8, IRQ: 2, Flags: Fourport
/dev/ttyS7, UART: unknown, Port: 0x01b0, IRQ: 2, Flags: Fourport
Another person on this forum (different thread) said that my modem is a winmodem so it seems I will not be able to get my modem to work. Thanks for the help, eon and jjmac.
I am suprise that my modem is a winmodem. When I bought my pc, there was nothing mention about the modem being a winmodem. In windows, I look at my modem and there is no mention about the modem being a winmodem.
In control panel when I click on my modem and look at the property I get this:
Port: COM 2
Interrupt: 3
Address 2f8
Uart INS 8250
Highest Speed:115 Baud
RockwellHCF 56k Data Fax PCI Modem
ATI1 255
ATI2 ok
ATI3 2.1.2.107.1
ATI4 RockwellHCF 56k Data Fax PCI Modem
ATI5 181
ATI6 DP Rev BA
ATI6 SPX Download 44
ATI6 CLT Download 44
AtI7 255

I wan to thank everyone for the helping me.

Hey kn2user, Don't give up yet. particularly if you are a knoppix fan.
We should have had you go here: http://www.linmodems.org/
Get the scan modem tool and find out excactly what modem you have.
The above link also contains lots of resources to get that modem to work
with knoppix. And if it can't be made to work ( the truth is winmodem are put in
because they are cheap I mean I can buy a winmodem for $6 to $9.)
All is not lost you can just pull that cheapo if you want and replace it with a
controller type or you can get an external modem-most of those work with linux.
Thanks for appreciating the help so stay and help linux grow!

Thanks eon for the website.
I will still use knoppix and I am not giving up on that. I am giving up on trying to get the modem to work.
I will check out the site and see what can be done.
