This unit was retired from a clean office environment. The company that previously owned this machine removed the hard drive for security - and that’s good since the standard drives installed in these units by Apple were small and very slow by todays standards. AND hard drives are usually the first thing to fail on computers anyway - you don’t want to start with an already old hard drive.
I doubled the original RAM to 4GB and removed the original hard drive and replaced it with a MUCH bigger, MUCH faster HGST (Hitachi Global Storage Technologies) 7200RPM 1TB hard drive. With these new computer‘guts’ this little machine runs El Capitan quite well.
If you’re looking for an inexpensive Mac for the kids, for a TV media device or as a second/third household computer, this might be just what you’re looking for. Keep in mind that you’ll need your own keyboard/mouse/monitor for this little guy - none of that stuff isincluded. Also, this model has a MiniDisplay port so you either need anApple Monitor with a MiniDisplay connectoror branded adapters work best - others can befinicky).
The current low end 1.4GHz Mac Mini starts at $499 and comes with 4GB of RAM and a puny, SLOW 500GB hard drive - VASTLY inferior to the 1TB hard drive that I installed in this unit. Sure, it’s a newer, more efficient machine, but is it worth THAT much more to you? Also, the hard drive and RAM in the latest Mini is fixed for life - you’re stuck with that small hard drive and that 4GB of memory forever. My computer can be upgraded to 8GB of RAM and ANY hard drive upgrade you please. You can put a 2TB Solid State drive in it right now if you can afford it - TODAY if you wish.
