Here is a 30-year-old Macintosh which has had a \"slightly less than wonderful\" reputation since 1993. This is the first working IIvx which I have found in 20 years. When I look at completed items for \"Mac IIvx\" they are all \"for parts or repair\" or \"untested\"The Mac IIvx was the first Mac to feature an internal CD ROM drive (which required a caddy to hold the CD). It was also one of the last to use a 32-bit Motorola 68030, which Apple crippled by a motherboard with a 16-bit data bus. Those who purchased a IIvx for $3K in late 1992 were upset at Apple when, only five months later, they released the Centris 650 in the same desktop case at the same price but with a real 68040 processor. This example has the maximum 68MB of RAM installed. The first 4MB is soldered to the motherboard. Additional memory requires 30-pin SIMMs, installed four at a time, with only four sockets available. Therefore, this example has four scarce 16MB 30-pin SIMMs installed.
The previous owner clean installation of Mac OS 7.6, which is the newest compatible operating system. The hard drive is the original 80MB Quantum/Apple disk. Although the PRAM battery is bad, the system consistently powers on and boots. The 1.44MB floppy drive reads IBM or Mac formatted diskettes. I have used it to format, write, and read diskettes. The 2X CD ROM comes with a removable caddy which still works, despite plastic broken in both front corners.
