Vintage Macintosh Powerbook G3 Series Lombard M5343 OS 8.6 333 MHz/192MB/4GB HD:
$129.95

Description: Up for sale is a vintage Macintosh Powerbook G3 Series M5343 \"Lombard\" (Bronze Keyboard) laptop with dual-function expansion bay and Mac OS 8.6 installed. Includes AC power adapter, Getting Started and Troubleshooting booklets, original System 8.6 Install/Restore CD. Features:

  • 333MHz PowerPC processor
  • 192 MB PC100 SDRAM (original 64MB + 128MB added)
  • 4GB HD
  • Type II PC Card slot
  • 2 USB 1.1 ports
  • SCSI port (HDI-30)
  • Sound input and output ports
  • External TV out port (S-Video) w/composite-to-S-video cable
  • External video port (VGA)
  • Built-in Ethernet (10/100Base-T)
  • Internal 56K modem
  • 24X CD-ROM module **NOT WORKING – see \"Condition\" below**
  • Power:
    • 50 watt-hour removeable Li-Ion rechargeable battery **DEAD BATTERY included – see \"Condition\" below**
    • AC charger/power adapter

The dual-function expansion bay accomodates an expansion module such as the 24X CD-ROM module that came with this model, the 2X DVD-ROM module that came with the 400MHz model, or the VST Zip100 drive. (It could instead be used for a second battery to double the PowerBook\'s battery life, but the difficulty in finding working batteries today makes this impractical.) Includes a \"Weight Saving Device\" (empty plastic shell) to close off the expansion bay when not in use.

Condition: In remarkably good physical condition for a 24-year-old laptop. I am the original owner and treated it very gently. I used it for only about two years before I replaced it with a G4 Titanium, and since then it has been in storage in a smoke-free, pet-free home. The case has a few scuffs, mostly on the bottom, and some sticker adhesive residues; no apparent cracks or other damage. I have tested as much as I can; the RAM, hard drive, display, keyboard, and trackpad all appear to be functioning properly. There are several issues:

  • The battery is completely dead. The computer works fine on the AC adapter. I have included the dead battery, however, because I\'m not sure the adapter will power the laptop with no battery in place.
  • The backup battery for the PRAM, which holds time/date and other settings, is also dead. This means you will need to reset the date and time each time the computer is turned off if you want correct timestamps on your files. A dead PRAM battery can cause other issues if left installed, and the computer will run without it, so I removed the battery pack; I am including it for reference in case you want to try to find a replacement.
  • The CD-ROM drive appears to be non-functioning. The System Profiler sees the drive (see photos), but states \"No mounted media inserted\" with the System Install disk, a CD data disk, or an audio CD in the drive. There\'s no visible damage to the unit.
  • The laptop is still running the original install of Mac OS 8.6. I wanted to wipe the drive and do a clean install from the software disk, but that requires booting from the disk in the CD-ROM drive, which isn\'t working. So I have simply removed my files and third-party software, and removed password protection for the system. If you can find a working CD-ROM drive, you should be able to reinstall the system (the disk is readable on my G4). It is upgradeable to Mac OS 9.2.2 or OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) if you can find the install disks.

This PowerBook is being sold AS IS, for repair, restoration, and/or parts. I have described its current condition to the best of my ability, but considering its age, there are no guarantees of how long any component will last or whether repairs are feasible or possible. NO RETURNS FOR ANY REASON.

I make every attempt to provide accurate descriptions and photos of my listings, and cannot accept returns. Please review the pictures and description carefully, and contact me with any questions you might have before offerding or buying.

Payment and Shipping: Please use checkout. I ship only within the United States, by USPS Parcel Select Ground. No international orders accepted. Buyer will pay shipping and handling charges. Please check the charges to your ZIP code before offerding or buying.

Good luck, and thanks for looking!
