The device is implemented in a dual-use (desktop or rack-mounted) form factor. Original mounting brackets and mounting screws are included with the device, but are not attached to it (makes the device easier to ship). The device is designed to be rack-mounted in any of two positions, with either the indicator panel facing forward or with the connectors panel facing forward. To decouple the device from the manufacturer’s licensing and services, we have installed and configured pfSense, an open-source operating system for networking equipment.

The device is running on an Intel Atom C2358 processor with 8 GB RAM. The processor supports AES-NI crypto and QAT crypto. The sole storage device is an 80 GB Intel SSD. There are 14 Gigabit Ethernet ports; ports 1-4 are serviced by Intel i354 controllers; ports 5-6, by Intel i210 controllers; ports S1-S8 are in a switch configuration, also serviced by an Intel i210 controller. The switch is running on a Marvell Prestera chip and acts as an external dumb switch (the operating system is unaware of it, as it would be unaware of an external dumb switch), so ports S1-S8 can be assigned and managed only as a group and not individually.

The device is actively cooled, so you should expect some gentle fan noise.

We configured the device so that it is usable right out of the box. (Needless to say, all these settings are changeable.) The buyer will receive detailed configuration notes. Briefly, we designated port 1 as WAN and assigned the LAN function to the internal switch (ports S1-S8); the remaining ports are not configured beyond name assignment.

The device is in good physical condition (please review the photos). A power supply unit is included.
