For people who are visually impaired it would help if the default colors were high contrast. Two places in particular I've noticed that are problematic include the 3.8 startup boot prompt (pink on black) and vi in xterm (dark purple on black).

Hi ddrex,

There is support from Klaus Knopper and others for access features to be added to KNOPPIX.
At first the effort was called Tux4all but now the work is being done under Linaccess.
There is an effort for an access presentation at LinuxTag / Karlsurhe (June 22th - 25th).
Now that knoppix has the UNIONFS it is even better suited for special applications by developers.

But you may expect these issues do not get a lot of attention from the program community.
Any contributions are greatly appreciated.

Here is at least a start: http://www.linaccess.org/view.php?pageid=4100
The Tux4all mail list in mostly German language.
For access I do work with an mp3 player for audiobooks: http://kabook.sourceforge.net/
There is a KDE effort at http://accessibility.kde.org/

Best Wishes,
