Is 3.7 installed to the hard drive or are you running it live?

First, I would recommend that you aquire a later version of Knoppix. 3.7 ia rather old and may have issues that have been resolved in later versions. You need to find out if your sound card is configured properly, or drivers loaded.
You can do this by using "alsaconf" when logged in as "su", and configuring your driver/sound card, and then if required, configure "alsamixer" or "kmix", or both. That is one way, if my memory serves me correctly. There are also some "alsa" cheatcodes that can be used on boot up, if sound configuration is an issue. Look through the "Documentation" link at the top of the page and look for cheatcodes. You might also do a search in this forum, since it would be hard to believe this has not been addressed before. Simply typing "knoppix alsa" at the "boot:" prompt before Knoppix continues to boot might even resolve the issue for you.
The main reason I asked if it was Installed to the hard drive is simple, many things that usually work while running live, do not work when installed. Knoppix is really not intended for a hard drive install. At least not yet.
Here are a few usefull links:
http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=1 Contains a "sticky" on Root Passwords and one on Linux Commands.
http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Cheat_Codes Some information on Cheat Codes and their usage.
You can always search the forum for information if you are not sure about terminology or procedures. Many questions have been asked before and it would save you a lot of time.
The 3.7 is a unique os because it has both the 2.4 and 2.6 kernel. In addition, it has a lot of sound drivers in file. Like ckamin said, you need to learn the cheat codes. alsaconf in root should to the trick with the 2.6 kernel. Try to boot knoppix26 first. After confuration check out alsamixer and 'alsactl store' to save.
Saving all this setup in another matter.
I personnally like saving with 'persistant' to my HD on a linux file. and a swap file too.
check out other ways of saving by serching though out this forum. Ruymbeke has some really cool things.
good luck
Addendum:
4.0.2 is very good and the new 5.0.1 looks promising too.
