You need to edit syslinux.cfg inside the boot.img file.
cd to where your boot.img is stored
mkdir tmp
mount -o loop boot.img tmp
cd tmp
vi syslinux.cfg
The line starting with Default is the one to edit. At the end of about 3 lines of text you'll see "knoppix". Immediately after that is where you can enter cheatcodes that will be used by default. Also, there is a timeout=300 in that string of text somwhere which makes it wait 30 seconds before booting with the default options. You can set this to a lower vaule to reduce the wait time.
Be warned, you cannot increase the size of the boot.img. If you get warnings about not being able to save the file or swap file errors, its because the size has increased. Do not exit without saving or the file you're editing will be deleted entirely! Switch to another terminal, cd into your mounted boot.img loop and mv a non-essential file up one directory.
mv logo.pnm ..
^ That usually works.
Then go back to your original shell and save your edited syslinux.cfg. Then mv the logo.pnm file back into the mounted loop (it will become a partial file, but it is not used for anything except to fill space).
cd outside of the mounted boot.img (both terminalss if applicable), then unmount.

another solutions that can be mentioned:
just changing the value in KNOPPIX/etc/inittab to 2 instead of 5 (the fedault runlevel)
with best regards
