Replace KDE with gdm and windowmaker + screen resolution

I am more comfortable with gnome and windowmaker as my display managers. How do I do this in knoppix?

Also, what exactly do I need to do to change my res to 1024x768? There are many diffrenet ways described on the net, but none o f them have worked for ne?

This is for knoppix installed to hardisk.
Open konsole and run:
su
apt-get update
apt-get install gnome
apt-get install wmaker

If you want gnome to run from cd, get Gnoppix.

Try run kxconfig
or
mkxf86config
or edit
/etc/X11/x86config and add 1024x768 in Section "screen" under modes, and tinker a bit with
HorizSync and VertRefresh under Section "Monitor".
