Knoppix 5 - Blank screen when loading X?

I noticed several posts about this problem but have not found a solution yet.

I have a LiveCD (downloaded the version that came out in 2007) that works on an older machine so I know that the disc and monitor are good. However, when I put it into my duo-core tower, knoppix will load all the way to where it starts the xserver, and then I get the black screen.

Some interestnig notes:
1) Using Knoppix 2 cheat, I am able to get the text version of knoppix up and running. However, if I type startx, it will go to the black screen.

2) Windows XP loads fine, all displays work. All hardware works.

3) The machines has 2 GB of ram, an Intel Duo-Core processor, and a Geforce 7600 graphics card. When I load, I get two penguins at the top left of my screen. It is also loading the drivers for the graphics card, and says 7600 so I think it is grapping the right auto detects.

4) I created a LiveUSB (ya, made that up, live usb drive) that is having the same problems. It is 1 GB in size.

5) When I get the black screen, the monitor will go into standby after a bit, as if the computer shut off even though I can still hear the fans running. The power button on the monitor blinks when this happens.

If anyone knows how to fix, please post!

Well, I do not know how to get the files moved over since I used my only USB key to create a bootable usb key. However I did look at the files, and there are no error messages printed. Doing LCPCI>PCI.TXT and then browsing the file just gives a list of devices and the fact that they are from intel. The other file had a very long list of supported screen resolutions along with general information. Is there something specific I should be looking for?

frame buffer mode might work better if a little slower; try "fb1024x768" at the boot prompt...

the list of PCI would help perhaps to jog something i haven't thought of until i seen the lspci list

The graphics card is a 7600 that uses PCI express and has outputs for two moniturs through DVI, though only 1 monitor is plugged in right now. (tried two monitors, same problem, both work with old computer and new knoppix)

and the xorg.conf file will let me look at how your video has been auto configured

so, we also need to know what monitor it is
did you try the new duo core machine on the other screen ?

I had the same problem with very similar hardware and the 5.1.1 live CD. The screen would go blank when X was starting up, and from that point the system was apparently hung.

ASUS P5LD2-VM Motherboard
2 GB RAM
AM2 4200+ Dual core CPU
nVidia 7600GT 256MB PCI-E

I was able to boot with the following cheatcodes:
expert noapic

Accept the default kb and mouse settings.
In video configuration, select "nv" (the default is "ati", even though the 7600 card has been detected -- maybe this is part of the problem?)
I also provided the resolution and the exact horizontal and vertical refresh rates for my LCD monitor, but I don't think this is critical.

Other cheatcodes (specifying the refresh rates and resolution) did NOT help -- only expert/interactive mode seemed to work.

If it would help, I can provide the xorg.conf files from the successful session as described above, and for a runlevel 2 session with the auto-detect settings. Let me know.

The welcome voice comes up and X just dies. But it works fine on an old celeron/via board/mx 440.

My old Knoppix 4.x works but it doesn't find my NIC so I downloaded this 5.1 and X dies. 5.1 works in runlevel 2 though and so does the NIC.

My machine is
AMD 4200 X2
EPoX mother board with nForce4 Ultra chipset
nvidia 7600 GS PCI-E graphics card <-- common problem maybe????
