language settings seem to effect knoppix 3.2 behavior badly!

Much to my surprise I discovered that with setting te cheatcode lang=be at the boot prompt some options in knoppix 3.2 (running from cdrom) do not seem to work at all for instance saving your configuration to a floppy or /dev/hda1 or creating a persistent home directory!!
If i leave the language settings at the default (us -english) those things wonderfully work !!!So if i o not specify lang=be at the bootprompt
the abovementioned utilities work just fine...Is this a bug or what!?
