What is a loop file?

I'm curious about this. I've been in the software development business for a long time but have never heard of this terminology.

In this context it probably means something that exists as a file in one filesystem
but contains another filesystem. The compressed KNOPPIX file on the knoppix
CD is an example of such a file.
