what is broke - or - wifi with ext connector that works OOB?
I have been trying various cards to find something that will work Out Of Box with knoppix (and kismet/airsnort). so far no luck. If anyone knows of any please let me know.
right now i have a SMC2532W-B (prism 2.5), i have tried this on 3 different laptops with the same results.
on boot it is detecting the card but failing:
Code:
cardmgr[63]: starting, version is 3.2.2
cardmgr[63]: socket1: DemarcTech Relia-Wave 180mW 802.11b WLAN Card
cardmgr[63]: executing: 'modprobe prism2_cs'
cardmgr[63]: executing: './wlan-ng start wlan0'
cardmgr[63]: + Sample private network setup
cardmgr[63]: + /sbin/ifconfig wlan0 up
cardmgr[63]: + SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device
cardmgr[63]: + /sbin/pump -i wlan0 > /dev/null
cardmgr[63]: + Operation Failed.
that DemarcTech isnt the right card, but its basically hardware identical
also some things that may help:
ifconfig wlan0 =
Code:
wlan0
Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:00:00:00:00
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packet:0 errors:0 dropper:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropper:0 overruns:0 carrier:
collision:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
Interrupt:3 Base address:0x100
odd that the MAC is all 0's... PHLAK is giving me the same issues, but atleast reports the right MAC
cat /proc/interrupts shows prism2_cs on interrupt 3, and nothing else on 3
iwconfig =
Code:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
Warning: Driver for device wlan0 has been compiled with version 15 of Wireless Extension, while this program is using version 16.
Some things may be broken...
wlan0 IEEE 802.11-b Mode:Auto AccessPoint:00:00:00:00:00:00
Encryption key: off
lsmod is showing the prism2_cs, ds, and pcmcia_core being loaded, which i am told are the 3 things to check for....
I am really banging my head here. I am a complete n00b when it comes to linux, so if there is something you want to know, just tell me the command ;) I would like to see if loading the orinoco_cs driver would fix things, but i have no idea how!
not sure if this helps but WarBSD 0.2p1 (live cd) allowed this card to work out of box. thing is that is a 17meg iso and doesnt have all the cool stuff
