Knoppix3.3 based DVD- any requests or suggestions?
Well here's your chance to request whatever you would like to see in a Knoppix 3.3 based DVD.
This is just something I'm doing on my own and does not involve Klaus or the rest of the dev's! Please don't ask them about it.
If it's in Debian it should be easy enough to include it in the DVD or at least I will try. If it's not in Debian I will try to compile it but sometimes things just don't work out the way we want. ;) Please provide a link to any apps you would like to see that are not already in Debian because it is most likely that I will be too lazy to go searching for it myself. If you want to make a .deb that would be even better!
Please be specific in your requests- not just "I want an app that does blah...". Some apps cannot be included- for example: proftpd and vsftpd will each want to remove the other.
Should anyone care to host the .iso for download I'd like to hear from you. Also if someone would like to host the Knoppix 3.2DVD.iso send me an email.
I am not promising any specific date of offering this DVD for either purchase or download so please don't harrass me! I will however most likely offer the DVD for sale if there is enough interest in such a thing.
Please be aware that I am not becoming a rich man by selling Knoppix DVD's but rather most of that money has been spent to purchase blank cd-r media, mailers and postage to send Knoppix to those who might not otherwise have a chance to use this amazing piece of work. Thanks to those of you who have spent your hard-earned cash for something worthwhile.

:idea: You know it would really be great if Knoppix would go the route of MEPIS create a main DVD and/or CD and then a second DVD/CD that has tons more programs to add in, ready to go. That would certainly solve some of the space issuses with a regular CD set, and benefit with the "conversion" process for those migrating from some other OS.

From your post, it looks like you don't have a problem with including packages that can't be hosted on Debian because of license issues, therefore I nominate Squeak.

Squeak is AMAZING. Apps written for Squeak will run unmodified on almost any modern platform, from PDAs all the way up to Cray supercomputers, without porting. Its inventors include some of the Xerox PARC wizards who also invented the graphical user interface and a bunch of other stuff we all take for granted.
The only thing keeping Squeak out of Debian right now is its license. It's an open source license, but the license has some cruft in it that the Debian maintainers don't like. The Squeak people intend to fix the license someday.

This is really more for the people who will be using the Knoppix disk to install Debian on their hard drives (that's how I first did it). Why make them do apt-get install synaptic, if you can just put it on the disk for them...
Here's one to keep an eye on: an awesome symbolic math package (similar to Mathematica or Maple or Mathcad) called Axiom.

The open source version of Axiom is quite new and still under heavy development, but it may reach a usable state soon if it's not there already. I know some math people who are stuck using Windows right now, and I would like to show them Axiom running on Knoppix and blow their minds.
K3B has already been mentioned numerous times. This one is especially important because it will allow people to easily make copies of your Knoppix DVD for their friends.
BitTorrent has also been mentioned. Gotta put the latest version (3.3) of the BitTorrent client on there, if it isn't there already. (And make sure it is installed so that all of the installed browsers will use it automatically when the user clicks on a torrent link.) BitTorrent is important because it lets people download big .iso files and such really efficiently, and because it lets people like you and me distribute big .iso files without having to worry about hosting issues!
I see in your poll that 63% think that $10 is the best price, and 27% think that $15 is the best price. So split the difference, and go for $12.
The existence of BitTorrent and inexpensive ($112) DVD burners means that the number of people who will order a disk for $12 may not be large. But hopefully, as word spreads about Knoppix, the number of people who will order a disk for $12 will gradually increase anyway. Definitely worth doing no matter which way you think about it.

I think there should be a DVD version of Knoppix that includes all of the packages that have been removed from earlier versions of the CD (except packages that are totally obsolete). What limits are there on the size of a practical Knoppix DVD?
Obviously, there is the 4.7 GB limit.
Before that, you would hit the 2GB limit. Some people are using file systems (FAT32 for example) that cannot hold any file larger than that. Since many potential Knoppix users are current Windows users who cannot even download a file larger than 2GB, it would probably be wise not to piss them off by making your image too big for them to download.
Another limit to consider is the RAM limit. Since Knoppix works by building a virtual partition in RAMdisk with symlinks to the actual files in the clooped read-only image, adding a lot more files to the image will grow the RAMdisk and make less RAM available for actually running the kernel and the apps. Since many potential users are running Win98 and have 512KB of RAM or less, this might prove to be a problem if Knoppix gets too big. (As I understand it, Win98 will choke if you try to run it on a system with more than 512KB of RAM, so adding more RAM may not be an option for some people.) I have no idea how many more packages you can load before this becomes a problem for a significant number of people. So let's find out the hard way...
Once somebody gets a version of a Knoppix DVD available as a BitTorrent, I expect a community will quickly grow around it, expanding it and making new versions frequently. Since BitTorrent makes most hosting issue irrelevant, the only thing keeping people from releasing new versions of the .iso will be the hassle involved with actually building new .iso files. Since new tools are arriving to simplify that particular task, we may soon have an enviable problem: So many different Knoppix DVD .iso files available that it becomes difficult to choose between them!

It's something amazing.
You can mix the easy use of knoppix with hundreds (maybe thousands) programs. This would not be only a demo system. Ok I dont consider it a demo, I've installed ir on my hard disk, and on two friends hdd too. But having it on dvd, would be the solution of the 7 cds distributions, i think :wink:

[replying to myself] Earlier I mentioned a 2GB limit on file size for Win98 systems. Sorry, that was a brainfart, the limit is 4GB.
The older FAT16 file system has a limit of 2GB, but since a system that old probably can't even handle a DVD drive, it's not too relevant to this discussion.
So unless a 4GB image causes problems with too much RAM consumption, it seems likely we could keep adding more and more stuff to our versions of the Knoppix DVD for a very long time.
