Should I re-download it from elsewhere? I got this one from tracker.tx.se. Could tx comment on this? Can anybody else recommend a different bt?
kakakoka - what is in the file
KNOPPIX_V3.4-2004-05-04-EN_badmd5sum/KNOPPIX_V3.4-2004-05-04-EN.iso.md5 ?
What is in it should match the md5sum of
KNOPPIX_V3.4-2004-05-04-EN_badmd5sum/KNOPPIX_V3.4-2004-05-04-EN.iso
If not, then it's a bad download.
In the .md5 file there is
49a62cdac7a3afcee0d2d47ea17daa6f *KNOPPIX_V3.4-2004-05-04-EN.iso
so I guess I got a bad download.
Can anyone suggest a bt location which will work better?
Is there something wrong with the official one? http://torrent.unix-ag.uni-kl.de:6969/Quote:

i d/led the iso file with all server posted here, and i get the right md5sum.
Second time lucky on the first mirror posted gave me the 49a md5sum (which is the one in the .md5). I guess the load the servers are under caused the corruption.

There are at least two versions of 3.4. The two signatures that I've seen appear to have been released by Klaus. However, I have no idea why both are identically labeled: "V3.4-2004-05-04".
One has the signature 49a62cdac7a3afcee0d2d47ea17daa6f. This version was signed:
Another version has the signature 8e9cd4d310ad8381d1ec3326c6caae2b. This version was signed:Code:gpg: Signature made Mon May 3 14:28:49 2004 PDT using RSA key ID BA8F038D
gpg: Good signature from "Klaus Knopper <[email protected]>"
gpg: aka "Klaus Knopper <[email protected]>"
So, it appears that the later one is probably the one that people want.Code:gpg: Signature made Tue May 4 15:07:09 2004 PDT using RSA key ID BA8F038D
gpg: Good signature from "Klaus Knopper <[email protected]>"

If you have a problem, but are able to use the BT do it, since part of BT uses MD5sums, so you really don't need to check it. Still do though, it only takes a few minutes at most, and it verifies that the file is accurate.
P.s. if you DL it from a location not listed by knoppix, you should DL the md5sum from a verified server, or ask for it on the forums, that way you aren't DL something that is malware. I do this whenevery I am unsure about the source, and I want to save the main site some bandwith...
P.s. anyone else having problems with 2.6 and an Nforce2 chipset?
1) What is the difference ?Quote:

Dunno about nForce, but I get a kernel panic trying to boot the 2.6 kernel on my Thinkpad 600.
I downloaded the "...aa6f" version myself. Should I be concerned and trying to fing the "...ae2b" version instead? This seems very odd. :?Quote:

Thing is, I have one of these new fangled ASUS motherboards which is currently has both a SCSI card and is using the built in SATA RAID (two drives).
Booting in with the 2.4 kernel is fine, except that while my system detects my Creative Audigy 2 card, there is NO SOUND.
Trying to boot in with the 2.6 kernel, first off the SCSI detection tries going for the megaraid.o, then has a segmentation fault and then crashes (Much like some of the others have complained of). Now, even when I issue "knoppix noscsi", it skips SCSI detection and goes for the RAID driver. However, when It gets to setting /etc/fstab.... the installer crahes.
I'm pretty sure the problem lies within the RAID on my mobo. In the Linux kernel, these ASUS mobos with RAID really don't get handled well, if at all, and especially if they are formatted for use under Windows.
Similarly, Fedora doesn't work on my system either thanks to the Sil driver. Alan Cox calls these things "winraid" and as such, Linux doesn't support them yet (if at all).
I just wish there was an option to skip detection of the sata RAID.
I just downloaded the latest Knoppix version (...ae2b) from ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/knoppix/ which is a Knoppix mirror.Quote:

My guess is that the 49a62cdac7a3afcee0d2d47ea17daa6f one is probably an early release candidate (or Klaus noticed a mistake, and fixed it in the later one). So, we probably do want the 8e9cd4d310ad8381d1ec3326c6caae2b one (the later one), just in case. It appears to be made around a day later than the earlier one. However, I have no idea as to what the differences are.Quote:

It's obvious why the first file changed, but I don't know what the other two files do.
dont worry, only the help page in the isolinux bootloader/cheat-code screen has been modified. the text still showed knoppix 3.3.
be sure to read the knoppix mailinglists to get max information
http://mailman.linuxtag.org/pipermai...ay/005132.html
if u got the first knoppix 3.4 iso from some days ago, thats just fine, nothing to worry about.
no need for more net traffic congestion :)
thats also why the isolinux files f2 and f3 are different like madoka said before.
Whats up with the knoppix.com sight. It has been down for days. Any ideas as to when it might be coming back up.
Is anybody planning on remastering 3.4, taking out the 2.4 kernel and putting in KOffice and TeX?
I know, it's the exact reverse of Knopper's decisions, but I like KOffice and TeX, and don't see much benefit in having two kernels.

May be premature. Much as I want to go straight to 2.6 and leave 2.4 behind, kernel 2.6 has been giving me and a number of other users problems, and I'm not willing to rely upon it. Meanwhile, v.3.4 with the 2.4 kernel is the closest thing to flawless that I've ever seen. It's easy for me to mess about with 2.6, because I'm just playing now. But I wouldn't even THINK of doing a HD install of Knoppix 3.4 with the 2.6 kernel, even just for fun, until it works a little better, and there is NO WAY that I would be willing to rely upon it for anything important yet. Many people rely on these distributions for very important things in their lives, and while I would trust 3.4/2.4 with the very most important things in my life, I'd sooner rely on WinMe than Knoppix 3.4/2.6. Hopefully, the bugs will be resolved soon, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a new release before the end of May. Once 2.6 proves to work as reliably as 2.4, then I wouldn't be surprised to see the 2.4 kernel come out. Of course that doesn't mean that your apps will be replaced, necessarily - I'm betting that the freed space will be either reserved for expansion (to delay the necessity of DVD distribution) or allocated to a non-redundant app. But, hey, whaddoIknow??Quote:

apart from that they are the same. The 2 valid md5sums are :

I think the main torrent contains to the "old" ISO. Any chance that it would be updated?

Well, I've been trying to seed a torrent of the newer iso, but I can't seem to get the built-in tracker in Azureus (my BT client) working properly. If anyone has a tracker they'd be willing to let me post the torrent to I'll give that a try.Quote:

I only have a DSL connection however, and if it hogs too much bandwidth I'll need to kill it after a few hours, so please keep your BT clients open to help reseed!
EDIT: Ok, I THINK I have this setup right if anyone wants to give it a shot...
http://sivanandas.homeip.net:6969/
I've got the tracker passworded. Username is 'knoppix', password is 'netforum' (no quotes).
btw this is actually a folder with the iso, md5sum, cheatcodes etc...
Hope it works. This is my first attempt at hosting a torrent... :?
Re: Upgrading
ID10T error: insufficient knowledge for upgrade
I just downloaded and did a hdinstall about a week ago of 3.3.
Now, wanting to be current, I want to "upgrade" to 3.4. Do I need to just blowaway existing 3.3 on the hard disk and do a fresh install or is there an upgrade script of some kind. I would love to just upgrade/repair/replace/etc whatever the changes are, but didn't know if this was possible.
Thanks for helping the idiot
:)
Well as it works under SuSE (confirmed myself) well yes we should consider it a bug ...Quote:

The HD install includes both 2.4 and 2.6 and defaults to 2.4.Quote:

Now posting to alt.binaries.warez.linux
I have installed knoppix 3.4 to my hard disk and am now trying to install VMWare but it informs me that:
Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "2.95.4", while you are trying to use
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "3.3.3". This configuration is not supported and VMware
Workstation cannot work in such configuration. Please either recompile your
kernel with "/usr/bin/gcc" version "3.3.3", or restart /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl
with CC environment variable pointing to the "gcc" version "2.95.4".
How comes the gcc version is different from the version used to compile the kernal? Can I do anything to solve this? Is it possible to install gcc 2.9.5 and not have problems.
Thanks,
Tim
That is the current version in Sarge/testing thus it is installed and a lot of people still compile their kernels with the older version of gcc as does Klaus.Quote:

It is already installed and yes it works with no problems except for the symbolic link with some software.Quote:

Hello!
I started knoppix with the 2.6 kernel on my labtop
(the ct' editions 2.6 didn't load). As reported by others I got
a scsi-error and a segfault. Loaded with option "knoppix noscsi" and worked.
Started knoppix-installer in debian-mode and rebooted.
"uname -a" showed the 2.4 kernel again.
However the knoppix-installer configured /etc/lilo.conf
with boot options for the 2.4 and 2.6.5 kernels.
I opend lilo.conf and looked for the entry /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.5
which has:
append="ramdisk_size=100000 ... ... ... "
changed it to
append="ramdisk_size=100000 ... ... ... noscsi"
now I run "lilo" and rebooted.
Nice lilo boot-menu, now I can choose the 2.4 kernel or the
2.6.5 kernel.
Stephan
I used the following command to set gcc to version 2.9.5.
export CC=/usr/bin/gcc2.95
Then just run the vmware install.
When installing vmware with the knoppix 3.4 version note that kernel headers are required to compile the video driver module. The new version of knoppix only contains kernel headers for the 2.4.26 kernel and not for the 2.6.5 kernel. You will have to boot from the 2.4.26 kernel in order to finish the vmware install.
I've had a problem with 2.6.5 kernel starting in VMware (knoppix26 nobootscsi) and then once the desktop comes up, the keyboard doesn't respond. Hitting Shift-Insert seems to cure it.
I just wanted to mention that I really like the new scripts for bluetooth access and use them often. Thanks knoppix developers.
Does anyone know where I can get the 2.6.5 kernel headers from the 3.4 version of knoppix? I'll probably make trouble if I install the ones from debian as the kernels aren't identical.
:P
