Seems to bring it one step further. At the end it says:

Can't find KNOPPIX file system

You copied the 2 (KNOPPIX and KNOPPIX2) files to D:\KNOPPIX ? They should be there.

During my various attempts I moved the two files to the root directory. Moving them back into a directory KNOPPIX makes Knoppix boot just wonderful straight to the KDE desktop.

Well I am glad it is working now. I would like to point out that once you create a "persistent home" any settings you make to KDE, or the system in general are preserved on shutdown, and you are given the choice to use them on startups that follow. It takes Knoppix to a whole new level. Fast, user customizable, and if you break something... you can just delete the knoppix.img file. (I used to be afraid to break the linux installations I had)
I have even installed the M$ core web fonts, and played with it. Mostly because I found this page that described in enough detail to convince me to try it out.

One more thing, if you use Firefox, be sure to edit your /etc/profile and insert:
MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1
export MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO
See if you notice any difference!

Hey all, I have read so many ways to mount, load or boot from hdd via iso (no hdd install). Frankly my mind is spinning in circles and i'm bound to mess something up.
I currently triple boot (vista, XP, and Ubuntu) all in different partitions of course.
Could someone either explain this to me like i'm 10 years old or like the linux n00b that I am?
I understand that Knoppix 5.0.1 is not recommended to be installed from in HDD.
However like many I want Knoppix to run in HDD, for its speed and convenience of not have to boot to disc.
What's my best route. Could someone be so kind and point me in the right direction or throw me a link.

It will modify your c:\boot.ini (if it can), and leave a backup copy named boot.$z$ just in case.

Changed it a few times, version 0.4 now. My buddy tested it on his machine a few thousand miles away... and with no experience in Linux, and I do mean no experience, he had knoppix running from a boot menu. I added the menu options to also boot from hda2, hdb1 and sda1 for thumb drives.

I am glad you discovered what the problem with 5.0.1 and ntfs was. The command above didn't work for me. So I volunteer to test. Your miniroots, the next Knoppix, whatever. Windows Genuine Advantage sucks big time. It's showtime!

I'm another newbie to this whole boot from an .ISO image thing.. but it sounds like a cool concept
I was just wondering if this boot from .iso method only applies to knoppix, or does it work for any bootable cd image?
I would like to boot my windows xp cd, or other linux distro cds, etc. Is this possible ??
Sorry i didn't read through all 46 pages of this thread yet, but i kinda skimmed through the first few and last but they all talk about knoppix iso images it seems..
