Morphix release

Hey Vick!

KDE? well, i'm setting up something to increase the amount of modules i'll be able to build and maintain (in less time, thanks prp ;)), but the main reason that i havn't made a KDE-based module is that Knoppix and eadz both already have it! Now, this might be a bad excuse, but i thought i might as well work on some new ideas than copy others that already exist. (also a bad excuse though, if those ideas are better :))

As for now, i'm more busy working out the bugs of the existing modules, but there have been a number of people suggesting it, so if enough people bother me i _might_ work on it, wokay? :)

otoh, are icewm and gnome2.2 fancy geek :shock: things? Then again, i'm clearly biased ;)

My comment was not on your work, your work is beautiful and excellent.
icewm and gnome2.2 are nice and stable but to stiff not really configure friendly, KDE is very friendly configure we can change almost everything with in easy, it's intuitive.
Sum will say thing different that's why gnome, kde and icewm exist, it’s made for all the different kind of people in this word that we have to respect, sum love buffalos jeans and others love Levi’s and that’s ok :wink:

Hehe, don't worry, it wasn't an attack on your post, just a few counter-arguments on why i'm not focusing on a KDE -based module now ;)

a KDE module might be made within a few weeks, Morphix shouldn't be just Levi's, you are perfectly right, it ought to be the shop that includes a number of different flavours... but we're still in the process of building it up, so just be patient :D

Hi forum,
I liked Heavy GUI 0.3 with Gnome 2.2. Look and feel good and works fast but i have some problems:
- it does not work with 64 MB of RAM. It does not request to use the hard disk for SWAP.
- In the boot options (cheatcodes) it does not appear Wheelmouse.
- When booting morphix/gnome 2.2 not autodetect the HD partitions.
- it does not work: df -k
- In menu Actions > Open Recient, appears files that do not exist.
- Gmplayer does not work, error in gui.

I tried your Morphix HeavyGUI ...
I never tried Gnome before, as I kinda thought from the get go that KDE was/is a better X ... but ... Gnome is quite nice, thnx for letting me try it this way !!
There are however a few minor problems I got :
* It doesn't setup my DHCP automagically ...
I had to edit the resolv.conf myself to get internet working.
* It doesn't automount anything in my setup.
Couldn't get XMMS to play any mp3's from HD, CD or floppy.
* I couldn't browse the network... but this could be just me
Beside these (minor) problems, again : Thnx for introducing me to Gnome.
Hope you got some information you can use from my problems...

Nice that you liked Gnome! I'm glad i can introduce more people here to the diversity of Free Software :) I guess i should change the gui some more, as it can get a lot better, but you get the general idea.
I'll put these on the wiki, so i shouldn't forget (however, the site seems down atm, i'm a lowsey admin ;))

- 'morphix wheel' should work, i'll change the cheatcodes. If it doesn't work, you're free to yell at me :P

- will remove. are those desktop icons there btw? i made a few nice links to knoppix.net and morphix.org, and one to the installer, but don't know if they where included in the release last week...

- DHCP after the install is indeed broken. It should work from CD though, could you pass me your /var/log/syslog if it is from CD?
- automount is broken, been messing around with it too much. Will fix :)
- I'll have to try out XMMS, maybe i missed a plugin, maybe it didn't detect your soundcard?
- havn't figured out the SMB-network browser, maybe i'll try a newer Gnome2.2 version, as this still was a pre-release...

Working on the bugs submitted (by email, wiki or forum posts), hope to release new modules within the next few days.

Got a test-iso on the mirror containing KDE3.1. Couldn't handle the pressure from you all (then again, i must admit KDE is very flashy ;)), it's a bare iso with only some of the latest KDE/QT packages in Debian Sid: 275megs in all. For more information, check the wiki on morphix.org (not much up yet)

It does have some problems (would like to have confirmed that X doesn't start up proper, takes some time, but could be my test machine), so don't see it as an 'official' release. The adventurous may take a look, the ordinary home-user wanting a stable ride should just use eadz KnoppixKDE. Wishlists for extra packages are always welcome, as are bugreports and all the other bladiebla.

The server doesn't quite start up correctly. Seems to have a problem with the screen resolutions, as it tried several before getting it right. Can't remember the log file for startup, but if you tell me, I can send you it for analysis. Also, the kmenu didn't have the menu entries coloured. They were blank until you ran your mouse over it. I booted in vmware, so that may be one of the problems. Will be burning the disk later tonight and trying it on the test machine. I will post results later.

Thanks for trying it out! I had the same problems under vmware as you, to my surprise the menu did seem normal when booting from CD. You don't have to get yourself in knots to send the logfile, I had the same problem, just needed to know that it wasn't my hw ;) (it seems to jump to vesa for some strange reason)

Interested in if you miss anything, i'm not a KDE-user so i may have missed some nice apps out everyone would crave for. I might up a new version tomorrow, with an updated version of everything (...that seems to moderatly work :D)

Is there a way I can use the new GTK-installer from Morphix on Knoppix ?
I don't know how to adapt this as it would probably look for the "mainmodule" folder on the CD ?!?!
As I am only moderately into the whole remastering process of Knoppix, I don't (yet) understand the idea of remastering modules and stuff you use.
The installer however has a build in feature of changing the default user...
(I planned to add this to my scripts... like to know how you did it)
I saw on the Morphix page that you plan to make it really easy for people to remaster Morphix in the future... I'm trying to do that for Knoppix right now (maybe not as elegant as you though ;)) ... I really like the idea !
As your progress seems to be faster then the progress of Knoppix at this time, I suspect I'll get into Morphix in no time at all.
