Whoa! Did I find an undocumented easter egg? There's an menu item that Fabian put in (KNOPPIX -> Utilities -> Install programs (from live CD)), or something like that. Looks to be similar to Klik in concept, but includes APT!! Using a poorman's install (fromhd) with PH, I was able to run apt-get update in the console (or so it appeared). Any word on the limitations of this option or how it works? After running it, I tried to save configuration, but got an error, and got another error when I tried to reboot IIRC, something about the size of the config file. Sure enough, configs.tbz had balooned to 2 MB. Is this where the programs get installed?? (I assumed they'd be installed to the PH, right?) Is there a 2MB file size limitation? Is this a function of the chosen filesystem, such that one filesystem type might be preferable to another for this? I realize there are disclaimers all over the place about the experimental nature of this script, but I am very curious if anyone can shed some light on this.Quote:

Hi! I don't think that "klik" feature on KNOPPIX 3.6 is new. I thought I saw it there in 3.4 on the last release. However, the apt-get option is new, I think!
I just tried it with my new 3.6 CD (who's iso took forever to d/l) and got nothing really working. I tried to get tuxracer just to see how it worked. It did what looked like a huge apt-get update first, then downloaded and installed the game. The game wouldn't run though!
Then I tried to get apt-get and all seemed well. I tried to apt-get install bzflag and came up with something about an apt-get download space error....
What gives?

Oh, I know Klik isn't new. What's new about Klik is that it doesn't work with 3.6. Klik was around before 3.4, IIRC. Klik, as you know, gets installed from an external website. This script is built into Knoppix itself, for the first time that I'm aware. And, I don't recall hearing anything about APT in any context other than a hdinstall before 3.6 - not even rumors.

For the first time, support for Promise SATA controllers is built into 3.6-20040816 (2.6 kernel)! I'm not sure if the support was built into the kernel (I *think* it has to be built in, versus using a module).
I've been seeking support for the Promise SATA controller in KNOPPIX kernels for about a year now. In the mean time, Gentoo has served me quite well, but it is good to know that I can fall back on KNOPPIX as needed.

This is the first version that sees my Promise SATA controller, too. All aspects of 3.6 seem to work perfectly on all 3 of my computers. Great work!
Okay, I just got the image last night. Burning the image now. I'm just happy that we got a new update! I just couldn't get the captive ntfs program to work right, so I'm hoping this edition will work properly.
So is my knoppix 3.4 worth for updating to 3.6?
I use the HDD install version.
Also i would like to know, is it same as i just update 3.4 version with apt-get update&upgrade?

Not in my opinion, from what I've seen so far. Many of the bugs in 3.4 appear to be unresolved in 3.6. I don't mean any disrespect to anyone, but I can't tell that the 3.4 buglist was consulted or referred to in preparing 3.6. For example, that captive NTFS script still plows my computer into the dirt looking for drivers, long after it's already found them, but gives no option to exit (pulling the plug is the only way to exit). WLAN detection is still wanting, as the 2.6 kernel keeps looking for the prism 2 drivers in the 2.6 directory structure, when they are in the 2.4 directory structure. There are some new on the fly live CD program installation scripts for a few programs, but not as many as Klik, and Klik apparently doesn't work any more. I haven't looked to see if Open Office still has German menus .
To me, it looks like the release focused too heavily on new development of fancy stuff, and not enough on resolving existing problems. You guys didn't hire someone from Redmond to do this release, did you? :wink:
3.6 has a lot of potential that I hope they can iron out (as with any new release - in all fairness, there are far fewer problems than with 3.4's initial release). But I'd recommend sticking with 3.4, if it works for you.
I suspect that the dual kernel thing is causing a lot of problems also (e.g., the wlan drivers). I really hope the next release will just focus on the newest kernel and dump 2.4.

Good advice, jd, I never hdinstall the latest, greatest release anyway. It usually takes a few extra releases to get the bugs out anyway!
I am tempted by the FreeNX client/sever model.... :wink:

I have just downloaded and tried out v3.6 and agree with j.drake. Its seems the same bugs that were in 3.4 are still in 3.6. :( My sound doesn't work and it doesn't see my USB drives, etc).
I have been using Knoppix 3.6 for few days already after installing on HardDrive using Knoppix-Installer. It is just great. It came with KDE 3.2.3 though and I wish it came with KDE 3.3.x I have done apt-get for some of the latest apps. and worked flawlessly except for KDE 3.3.x. It just wouldn't work. I would like to upgrade to KDE v3.3.x. Any one has done that already? Does it work? Here is my entry in the Sources.list among others

If you're installing to HD, why bother with Knoppix 3.6 and just use 3.4, then apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, and apt-get dist-upgrade? Then you'd have a Debian/Knoppix installation with the lastest KDE v3.3.0 among the many other updated applications.Quote:

I've tried OO in V3.6 and it has English menus and the help documentation is in English too.
However, as I wrote in another thread, there was something in my persistent home directory which was making OO start up an installation script that was in German. To fix it I had to tar up my V3.4 PH, boot V3.6 without a PH and then create a new PH, start up OO just to be sure it's OK and then untar the V3.4 archive into the new PH.
I've now got a PH in V3.6 and OO is working - finally

Actually, what I was referring to happens with or without a PH, and is documented in the 3.4 buglist. Even though the ovverwhelming majority of menus in Open Office are in English, look under the submenus of File->New, and File->AutoPilot, and I think you'll see that many of the submenus are written in German.
It's not a big deal at all, and the only reason I brought it up was to confirm that the version 3.4 bugs (even the silly ones like this) were not resolved in 3.6. It's not a big deal, and in hindsight, I should have indicated as such with an emoticon when I made the comment. In fact, far be it from me to criticize at all, when the people developing the package are unpaid, and, when it comes to computer skills, I'm not even worthy to wipe their shoes. The only reasons I mentioned the outstanding bugs at all were: (1) to answer the earlier question of whether the 3.6 enhancements over 3.4 justified to time and energy to download and setup, and (2) in an attempt to assist product development by helping to point out issues to be resolved.
As it turns out, I'm having to re-do my PH as well, primarily, I suspect, because I saved the tohd image to the PH partition. Consequently, in order to redo my PH, I had to first boot in live CD without the tohd cheatcode, then set up the PH, then reboot, then setup new configs.

I also ran into problems when creating the new PH on the same drive as the fromhd drive. When I rebooted, there was an error message during boot up that said that the PH was a FAT32 format. I couldn't figure out what was wrong, booted into windows, moved the knoppix.img file to a different partition, rebooted Knoppix and all was well.Quote:

At least, as shown in the snapshot, it runs KDE 3.3 instead of 3.2.3. This is what I am interested in and I wonder if he has compiled it and have a deb file for it? It seems like it is very stripped down version? Will it have server/client FreeNX?Quote:
