I feel smart... I finally (convincing me parents was the hardest part), got a linux partion on the computer... did everything correctly (had a little much up when i typed in the wrong password when setting it because i wasnt really looking)... and now... i COME TO YOU USING KNOPPIX!!

i feel soo evil :twisted: <-- hence the evil picture...

anyway... i just had to say, wow... its really fast on a P4, (been using a P2, not connected to the net)...

and now i am laughing, and i feel soo smert... did nothing to connect to the net (it even seems faster on linux!! hmm), and now i am laughing... :lol:

and i had to tell all of you... not gloating by the way, just laughing evily.. :D:D

I can vouch for the speed... I am running an AMD 64bit, and using Kanotix 64, it does burn:!:

As for the internet, that has always been problematic, with windows. Our "local" ISP has always had dissconnects, line drops, froze connections, etc... With Windows. When we converted our systems over to Linux, all of our connection problems just, dissapeared. I can attest, that I have been connected for more than a week, at one time, and not once, got dropped, dissconnected, or had any froze connections. All of our connection problems just "went away" with our installing Linux.

Glad to see you got a few "converts", and that you are growing within Linux, to the point of getting answers, helping others, and becoming a smart evil banana :)

My provider, a small business, runs, or rather, rents, MS IIS. So, instead of me getting craked by spam bots and assorted crawly things, the IP does instead. I think they just grabbed the customer lists and now.. the spam just flooowws.

I shudder to look at my mai, so i just let it build up to full and then it stops. Except for the hassel of getting mail from the IP ..."You mail box is full etc" :roll:

Intrusion isn't exclusive to dialup though. But if the IP dosen't use any decent defense ... it won't matter what kind of account you have.

Howdy c-h,

How would changing you number help. If it's an IP account, all a person has to do is scan the IP accounts to find a given domain path trace to a specific account holder. Or just 'do over' a range. Easier if the IP is a small business, that is, less accounts to scan.

Hope you firewall at your end. If not you should (iptables). It's a snak to set up.

And a decent intrusion detector like 'snort' is good to run. It's nothing short of facinating the things that checkout your ports while your online. Which otherwise, go totally unnoticed.

I'm getting quite hooked to BSG. I quite like the computer game attmosphere associated with the battle scenes too. Especially the attention they pay to a zero gravity environment. It reminds me of when i used to play 'asteroids' a lot on the machines in town (Sydney) (grin)

Maybe you could practice/develop it a bit. Say ... keep a dummy share portfolio maybe, and see what happens there. Somethings though, only work when there not attempted concously (worse luck). Maybe all the humans are Cylons, but at a much later stage than the current lot. Last weeks episode certainly had a strong religous/destiny air to it, as though something conclusive was about to happen. And the madam president ... like, she is now starting to hallucinate all over the place.


..... the last one ... damn Packer and all that club. It pisses me a bit the way they just leave shows hanging. It is such a blatant ... couldn't give a stuff ... attitude that they have.

It would be great if a person could install an 'add' filter into a tv set, similar to 'junkbuster' and the like. Probably not impossible. If Linux can be employed in areas like amature Radio, why not as a tv signal gateway... hey (grin) is that an idea for a Project or what. Wish i didn't just know zilch about tv workings :)

At least the box likes it. Dreading summer on that level, not to mention dust. I saw a good looking water cooling system based on a convection tower from a company called "Zalman" the other day. Around 249 or 269 $'s. Dust is a real problem my way ... it gets every where inside.

No fan ... no dust, to deceptively simple maybe (grin), gotta be a flaw there somewhere.

Last episode, oh well (grin), maybe there will be a hint in tonights episode ... unless they just kill it at whatever point. Soon as the advert contract runs out most likely.

I love the speed, but I waste most of my saved time hitting the backspace key! What dumb thing am I overlooking to control this?:oops:

I think iv'e got BSG figured ... as the opening splash screen has a strong destiney/creational theme, i figure thats the basic idea driving the story.

The ending ... well ... it did look a bit like a 'baby basket' on that alter.

Human kind created the cylons, but who are they ... like the borg they are many but also just one. I think all the clones of the chinese girl, when one of them touched her on the cheek ... they must have down loaded an unlocking key of some kind which put her into her mission mode. Maybe all the humans are really cylons. Maybe humans are really cylons at the end of their cycle. In that the cylons wish, or have a drive to transform into life ... as it's the only thing they really lack. But have no idea as to how that frailty will eventually result in their decline.

I get the idea the time context of the show is circular rather than the standard common linear assumption.

cylons --> humans --> cylons --> ...

The way the show ended ... on a beginning note (grin)

It had to do that the night where I gave me copy to me friend to try (ran out of blank cd's so i couldnt burn it, and the original disk was stuffed). So i did try the original disk... but it didnt want to open <-- proberly because it was scratched, because it lives in a slip... anyway... had to use feather linux to reload lilo, and anyway, it installed only the kernal... so i have to reload knoppix again... (aww well, fresh start, a new slate where i havent made any mistakes like accidently call me computer Big instead of Big Lilly, and type in me wrong password)...

anyone know why that happened??

and have a double story in it, that spreads for several seasons and you find out something shocking about a person just to keep the ratings up...



but that nuclear explosion in the cylon main ship looked awsome... I was like... WOW!!! at least it ended on a cool note... the good thing about it was that you actually got to see it explode, non of this "lets point the camera at the persons face while they look away in horror. so we can save us some money"...
the next question is will there be a next season... the problem is that they had a real bad start, they went no where with the story... because they pritty much killed off everyone they couldnt risk having another battle... :( thats the problem when you cut down your population in a story... you dont have anywhere to move to kill off people, introduce new people that have really nothing to do with the series and are only a one off...

but it would be great if they found another colloney of humans, with different technology looking for the same thing

What ever you did, it would seem that the 1st stage couldn't find the second stage.

There can be a number of reasons for that ... If you installed a new copy of lilo, but it was incomplete, then the 2nd stage was probably missing.

If you removed the partition entry from the main table ... the 1st stage wouldn't find its' 2nd stage as a result. As it's still working through the bios untill the 2nd stage loader is brought in.

It would be interesting to see some "apt-get" log output. KDE is a large program, so there would have a lot of things that apt would have been attempting to fetch.

You can do "dummy" runs of "apt-get". I think it has a --dry-run switch. If you pipe the output to a log ... you should get a good idea on any problems that may occure during the actual update.

I think the ending had a definite ... to be continued ... type of air to it. As soon as they figure out were to continue it to, that is.

On your install though ... have you tryed a direct copy from the running cd to a partition. The only quirk is that you need to reset all the read-only file settings. A bit drawn out, and needs monitoring ... but interesting still ...

Just change the "default=" option to point at the windows label and that will boot if nothing else is selected.

If that field is left out, or is blank ... then the first on the list will boot.

Use the "other=" option for any none linux OSes.

You need to have the partitions that contain kernels mounted to update the map file, only for linux systems. If all the kernels reside in the one boot partition then that would be the only one needed.

Kernels don't need to be on the root partition. And when/if they need to be mounted it doesn't matter where, for the map files update that is. Lilo will use the file system to trace down the correct disk locations.

You must run lilo as root to update that file after a config change.

Using the "-t" switch is good for a test-run, and "-v" switch is good for extra info.

Latest version always recommended.

ok to the idea... i have an idea for knoppix... i think its great, but what you think, well... it could be different...

I was reading me APC magizine, when i came across this section for businesses, and it said something about cheap software, and so on and so on... back to me idea... It got me thinking...

some small business' are really small, and they are loosing most of their money because of expensive software like windows, and microsoft office, and updating security so their company can be protected... it got me thinking... why dont we creat another knoppix directed at business... It could be called "Knoppix- Bused" Bused standing for Business Edition... it could be directed directly at business...

for example, it could be smalled then the knoppix is right now, knowing that many small business' have 2nd hand computers, which are slow and that, and a live cd being on a slow computer... well, we all know it isnt that fun... well, it could be very light, so light we could (if we really wanted to), squeeze it under 200Mb if we wanted to... (they could if they wanted to, load on extra features later on, like games, Xservers, the stuff which dont really apply to people who dont know many shortcuts, etc). It would have what business' need, exactly what they need, like a Quickbook equivalent, OpenOffice... a firewall (all small business' think the only way to be safe, is to have a firewall... ), etc... but yes there is a catch...

WE HAVE TO MAKE IT UltrA USER FRIENDLY!!! big icons, saying... OPEN OFFICE! Word processing...

people wont use software if they dont know how to use it... we need to pritty much, get rid of the learning curve... we need to make it so, that these business people (i am assuming that they know how to use M word), can look directly at OpenOffice and be able to use it without needing to have lessons or anything... We would pritty much need to dumb down everything! <--i know, it will be a sad sad day... this might mean getting rid of the boot screen and have a GUI screen, where you have buttons where you get to choose several options like "Trial CD", "CHoose Desktop" or "Install TO HD"...

and we have to make it look like its a business desktop, at the same time, try to make it able to make it personal...

well... i could elaborate on it, but right now... i should edit lilo... i will post more, but please... EVERYBODY!! post what you think... btw, we could still have the original version of knoppix still running... it would be much like XP home, and XP Profesional... but with a better OS.

Using a 1024x768 screen with 64k colour, with 32 bit LBA enabled ( a good idea) and with the 1st stage installed on the mbr.

If you decide to uninstall Lilo, do "lilo -u" to restore the mbr first. Rather than just over-ewriting its' partition or removing its' table entry then rebooting. Other wise you will still have a lilo 1st stage trying to bootstrap a 2nd stage that either isn't there any more, or it can't find. Incidently, you will find your original/previous mbr stashed in /boot/boot.0300. If you raw copy that to a floppy you will have your original mbr safely stored away on that.

And your booting the 2nd partition on the 1st drive.

It, must be an old lilo. Newer versions just use "install=menu" for a menu based 1st stage, or "menu=text" for a text based menu. Which you would set up with the "bootmess.txt" file. In which case you would need a "prompt" option stated as well. The "bootmess.txt" is just layed out to describe your different kernels/systems, with their labels ... to act as a kind of "jogger" to remind you what to type at the prompt.

Unless you have hw that needs special divers loaded at boot time, that the kernel hasn't got, you shouldn't need an "init.rd"


Seems ok, except for the possible menu thing ... I won't yack on about whether lilo should go on the mbr or not ... it does tend to be one of my pet rants ... but thats were every one puts it :roll:

So .... aside from all that,

As long as windows is on the 1st partition ... highly likely, ... then it should be ok.

c-h, what Lilo version are you using, and is the Linux a knoppix hd install or something else ??


I'm kinda thinking of a kernel upgrade to 2.6. It will give you a much faster/smoother desktop compared to 2.4. It does require some package updating though ... but once that stuffs out of the way, it's well worth it. 2.6 deals with module loading differently, and all bootsector type programs would need upgrading. Things like lilo. And "parted" ... especially things like parted. But, only just a thought :)



On your idea. Your kinda getting at something like a cut down enterprise version, specific for small business.... interesting ...

One thing about LiveCds' is that they are amazingly versatile things. They can be used as an actual distro, or a recovery/repair facility ... and also as a convenient and efficient means to "demo" Linux.

Such as a demo to a small business person who may otherwise not have the time to go through a hd install based trial.

So, basically a good idea i guess...

Go over Lilos' manual if you have time, it is worth the read :)

Don't forget that if you remove, or install on top of your Linux, you will be left with a Lilo stage 1 loader that won't be able to find it's second stage.

If you do a raw copy of the /boot/boot.0300 file to a floppy you will have the original (prior) mbr on that floppy. Effectively turning it into a boot disc. Albeit with the table as it existed at that time.

]# lilo -u

will copy the saved mbr (boot.0300) back.

Just mentioning as it is commonly forgotten by lots of people (grin) when they decide to install a new Linux to the existing partition.

My system is a woody 3.0 r0 base from late 2002 thats been largely recompiled/updated with packages which tend to spread over much of 2004. Some from 2005. So i guess it's a kind of woody/sarge/sid combo.

Point being that deb is often mistaken for a distro. It's more a "proof" of concept expression. The whole point to debian is that it shows that a working, viable OS, along with an associated sw collection is possible in a GNU context. Which was an underlining critisism of the FSF when it started up. Proprietry industry said that ... well, the concepts promoted by the FSF are all well and good, but a bit naive.

So, the two "Murdocks" proved them wrong. deb will state in their documentation that their intension is to provide a concept base that can be freely taken by other people in order to create a distro from. And so you have knoppix and a number of other deb based distros as a result.

The main criticism deb seems to attract is the "up-to-dateness" of the sw. Well, thats what "apt-get" is for :).

And like most things ... the info is in the docs, but your gotta look for it :).

That would be my only criticism ... obscure documentation. But then again ... the more you search the more available they seem to be.

deb also, often gets criticised for being a techi distro. Well, that is completely incorrect. It's just that it will do the UNIX like thing, and treat you as though you do have a degree of competence ( of soughts :) )

The system management facility "debconfig" dosen't get in your face. You can over-ride it, or work in conjunction with it, (depending on how you arrange its' comment tags in your config files), or let it control the system configuration.

So it tends to suffer the accusation that a lot of people who just sit quietly not making a lot of noise sometimes get accused of ... that is ... that they must be some sought of freakout intellectual :roll: (ever notice that (grin) ).

Iv'e learnt more from deb than i have from any other OS. But then again iv'e spent more time with it too. So that probably cancels out really. But, ultimately it was "dpkgs'" textual flatness and resulting flexability that convinced me to change over from my RH. The binary file formate of the rpm system used to irritate me no end. As a result of fiddling with things, i would inevitably muck things up. And not being able to get into a binary db, and being to stupid to have made backups (one thing iv'e certainly learned to do now (grin) ), i used to get into some very tight corners. But dpkg solved all that.

When i first started using the knoppix v3.3 LiveCD, and then copying it to disk etc ... frankly ..., iv'e had more screw ups with that than with any othe Linux :) :roll:

If you were to post the exact cli you used, like ... write it down somewhere first ... then also posted all the generated messages as well ... it would make things a lot easier.

Dealing with problems/quieries can be enjoyable ... as it becomes a challenge ... and is often mutually revealing. But it becomes hard work when a person has to guess all the time :). A bit of help wouldn't go astray there :wink:

Just as a general standby, look over your "man apt-get", doing an upgrade ( i figure thats what you mean) isn't a trivial exercise ... there are some preliminary steps that are advisable to be done first...

Also, could you post the file-size of those image files. I no there not large, but you never know how tight a persons down-load allocation may be that is reading the post. Like ... i'm running almost on empty now (grin) :)

I realise Knoppix and a lot of other Linux'es are Debian based but I was referring to the Debian. Isn't there just the one main Debian distro, and offshoots like Knoppix are based on that? I assumed that's what Chris-Harry is using now. I probably just got the wrong idea from your post (and emoticon)...bah, just ignore me. But I can just download "pure" Debian right? I picture it as being like Knoppix but without the missing stuff. Lots of times, I go to apt-get a program but it isn't available to Knoppix. Would I be wasting my time getting Debian in the hope that I can apt-get most (more) programs?

About the "Murdocks", do you mean Rupert Murdock? Do you mean there's more than one?!!!! One is enough. Never giving that guy any more of my money! A genuinely evil person. He scares me! Thanks again anyway. Hope I make sense.
