This will be probably be the last "single CD" version of KNOPPIX. Starting from Version 4.0 (coming soon), the project will be split into a "Light" CD version, and a "Maxi" DVD release.

Just a quick update on BitTorrent: I got my download in less than 2 hours on a 1.5 DSL line. Previously before BitTorrent I've sometimes taken 8 hours or more to download from a mirror (and then half my mirror downloads had bad md5 checksums) and many times I've started mirror downloads only to bail out of then when the estimated download time was figured in days, not hours. I'm currently seeding; it's not having a noticalbe effect on my surfing at all. (Using Bittorrent 4.0.1, not the newest but working just fine).
It looks good I'm installing it now.
I don't have a DVD burner, so I guess this will be my last CD burn that I'll do for a long while.Quote:

You must not have read thoroughly, there will continue to be a single cd version. You know, for the price of a couple copies bought from a site you could buy a dvd burner. Go to newegg.com and buy a unit for less than $60. The price is so low on burners now that the old argument of not having a dvd burner is really old hat. UnionFS is a experimental filesystem conceived at SUNY Stonybrook, about 15 mintues from my home. The Filesystem Lab of the CS deptarment received a $400,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to explore secure networkable stackable filesystems. UnionFS is the fruit of their research. It is not truely grounbreaking in concept (many people have thought of overlaying fileystems on top of each other), but it is fantastic when implemented on a Live CD like Knoppix. At this point in time, I like unionfs & hope that they can get around its bugs & quirks but it seems to me that the inclusion of unionfs in knoppix 3.8 was proof of concept: "It works. We got it running" as opposed to "It works well."

NO, not at all. ISO 9660, which Knoppix uses, limits any single file to 2 gig in size. But there is nothing that would stop a DVD release from having multiple compressed files, or even having a nice size compressed file and then a lot of Klik type files (which would make it very easy to add other Klik files to alternate releases).Quote:

If the DVD were to have multiple cloop- compressed files, how would the added files be un-compressed? Would there be a KNOPPIX0,KNOPPIX1, KNOPPIX2..........?
I have yet to be able to establish multiple compressed cloop by any method. I do have uncompressed material and CMG in a DVD which can fill out the 4.4GB burn.
Perhaps there is a way to use multiple cloop file systems but it would certainly not be done without severe modification to the minirt file. This may severely impact the boot system which Klaus has optimized.
The best approach as I see it is to accept the fine arrangement of KNOPPIX provided by the CD setup, add uncompressed data to the KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX ( or CMG which is 16MB limited per file and seven or eight files + some uncompressed data. Then, using device mapping technique, install compressed data to the boot section and modify minirt.gz accordingly Join the two files together for a full sized DVD.
Of course, perhaps cloop itself can be re-programmed to provide greater than 700MB of compressed data since it was designed to fill the CD to full capacity and provide KNOPPIX for slower and older machines.
The basic question is; what size will the DVD burn be? (to be released soon). The technique is another matter

I don't see how that can be. I boot Knoppix on a 512 meg laptop with a NTFS file system that it can't writen to. The cloop file is too large to fit into RAM and uncompressed it should take about 2 gig. So I don't believe that it is uncompressed at boot time; just what you need is extracted from it as required.Quote:

I removed the unionfs and knoppix-image packages and installed unionfs-module-2.6.11_1.0.9-2_i386.deb and knoppix-image_0.5-3_i386.deb which I got from knoppix 3.8-Cebit using dpkg-repack and remastered it but I still have the same problem. Do I have to do anything else? From where I can get unionfs-module-2.6.11_1.011_i386.deb? I did google but no results.
I did an interesting experiment. I started the remastered knoppix 3.9 fromhd using knoppix 3.8 CD. I did not have this problem at all. I was able to get to /etc folder and see all the files which I was not able to do using a knoppix 3.9 CD.
