Not actualy out yet, but very close. dakota has sent me a provate message that indicates it will be first released at Linux-Tag in 2 days. abittner has posted this message in the Knoppix-DVD forum. If our experience with 3.8 is any indication, it may be a couple of weeks or more before we see official files on the mirrors or on BitTorrent (I would urge using BitTorrent over the mirrors, particularly for the DVD version.)
If anyone at LinuxTag gets the Maxi (DVD-ROM) discs, please consider making an ISO & a bittorrent of them & then submitting them to either Welcome to The Linux Mirror Project or LinuxQuestions.org - ISOs so that it can get quickly mirrored.

I put up some screenshots of Knoppix 4.0 on my site. There are three galleries: One for general Knoppix 4.0 menus & applications. One for the a HD Install (read http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Hd_Install_HowTo before attempting). And one for after the HD install.

of course knopper as the creator/publisher of knoppix has all the rights to release his knoppix as he choses to and to upload it to the internet, but if he first distributes it on cd/dvd media are we allowed to share it on the net before he choses to do it that way?

Maybe the forum would be redisigned. Now DVD is just a field, but in next times maybe would be useful 2 sections, one for cd and the other for dvd users. I think I will be one of them in the cd section...for a while :cry:
Other than being split between a CD and DVD version what other changes are there in the base system and knoppix tools (not just added apps) since 3.9? I am curious because I have just spent quite a bit of time moving my knoppix based distro to 3.9 and need to know if it will be worth it to move to 4.0 or whether I should just wait for 4.1 or 4.2.
What I heard is that UnionFS is now working and several enhancements from Knoppix based distributions like Kantonix, Quantian, Paipix, Freeduc ... flowed back into Release 4.0. For example some Hardware support for widely used ISDN and DSL-Hardware from AVM, a enhanced Harddisk-Installer, and so on.
The DVD-Version is also directly bootable into the software-distributionsystem "m23". They also brought two e-books on it ("Knowing Knoppix" in english and "Knoppix Kompakt" in german). Also if you wish to choose between 4 different offices (OO 2.0 Beta(Build 104), KOffice, Abiword and Gnumeric), you should use Knoppix 4 :-)
So I think you can wait for the next version if you know something else to do while waiting on it...
Anybody that can torrent the 4.0 CD version, I'd appreciate it.
people say the cd version of knoppix 4.0 wont be out til quite some while after linuxtag

That's right. Here in Karlsruhe at LinuxTag you can only have a pressed DVD for 5€. That's the iso with little more than 4 GB which is availible as torrent.

you can only modify the keyboard/locale settings if i am not mistaken.... you cant switch on the fly over to a different language for all the apps bundled inside knoppix.

This is brought up every time Mr. Knopper released a German only ISO. It defaults to both a German keyboard map and German for all dialogs & menus. I am not absolutely certain, but other German releases allowed the user to use US English at boot up by using the Cheat Code:Quote:

The past release of Knoppix 3.8 Cebit Edition was German only and I hexedited the ISO file and created a fully default US English version. It should be possible to do the very same thing to Knoppix 4.0 DVD ISO. If anyone is interested, the process for hexediting the ISO is described here http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtop...?p=78397#78397. The hexedit allows me to edit the /boot/isolinux/isolinux.cfg file. I searched & then replaced every entry of lang=de to lang=us.
Impossible: 2 seeders, 0 leechers...

Making a new CD or DVD from an existing disc is called remastering. In theory, unless something has wildly changed it should be possible to remaster a Knoppix 4.0 DVD into a CD. This process is almost nothing like jigdo, which is a pretty sweet method of creating CD images. I've been downloading this DVD via BitTornado for 24 hours now and have only gotten 42% of it. Ouch.

Anybody here have a fast priv. server? Because its not gonna survive if it just lies on BT... just like the dead 3.6 dvd
Well, it certainly will survive until the offical 4.0 comes out; there will be plenty of interest until then. The last thing that BitTorrnt needs is the swarm to split to another tracker, that only reduces the speed on downloads. And putting it on a server isn't going to help the swarm much either (although may help those behind a corporate firewall that they can't use BitTorrent efectively from still steal bandwidth).Quote:

Sounds like you have found a great well seeded tracker. Would you post a link to the torrent that you used?
I'm using the default tracker posted before, which connects to a tracker with the domain: mongo.org
in the meantime, i'm going to send it over to TLM project and see if they can set up a better tracker and is officiated by the project tlmproject.org they have they're own proprietary tracker
Note in the screenshots that cloop has been upgraded to 4.0 GB and a second cloop added? This accounts for the ability to load to 4.0 GB. If you can't decompress 4GB file with cloop because cloop is too small (say normal CD size 2GB) would make sense.
I have tried bittorrent via the links and have received error messages on each attempt, one occurred after 1GB download saying I had two instances of the file.
I have bittorrent 4.2.1-2 installed.
Cannot download without errors.

What kernel is included in the DVD 4.0?

I don't think I am either. I'm using the 3.7 version (the last to use the 2.4x kernel) because my system seems to like it better than the 2.6 version.
Even if I got a new system, I would look at the CD version of Knoppix 4.0 first instead of the DVD.
And if I get a new laptop, which I've been thinking about, I'd get a 64 bit Turion laptop and try 64 bit Kanotix on it. :-)
Anyway, I don't think I need the DVD 4.0 version, especially if Klaus has made extra room on the CD by removing all the "developer" stuff to the DVD version, hopfully leaving more room for a few more well chosen end user applications.
That brings up another point. Though I think Knoppix does have a lot of well chosen applications, there is a lot of redundancy on the distro. I mean how many editors do we need? I'm not complaining though. Knoppix is pretty complete even as a CD version.
