Knoppix Version 3.4 Released

It appears version 3.4 has been released.

* V3.4-2004-05-03 (experimental)
- switched from syslinux to isolinux (no emulation) boot method
- Kernel 2.4.26 (default) and Kernel 2.6.5 (as boot option)
with ACPI enabled (use knoppix acpi=off in case of problems,
knoppix26 to try Kernel 2.6)
- New wireless drivers for: ipw2100 ("Centrino"(TM)), madwifi, hostap
- captive-ntfs installer
- live-installer by Fabian Franz
- KDE 3.2.2
- kdevelop3
- OpenOffice 1.1.1 (german and english)
- gimp 2.0
- Had to remove the entire latex system (101MB) because of space reasons
- Removed KOffice for the same reason
- /dev/modem setup tool supporting serial, USB, bluetooth and irda devices
- gprs connection tool
- lots of improvements in the hardware detection and new boot options, please
check knoppix-cheatcodes.txt.

Remember: Leave your bittorrent client running after the download is finished!

Everything is usually included in the download directory that is created when you run the BT client. If you have a firewall running make sure that you open/forward the ports 6881,6882,6883,6884,6885,6886,6887,6888,6889 or your download speed will suck.

This is certainly great news, but the cheatcodes don't mention how to disable that embarrassing voice during boot and shutdown. Or did that lady follow Koffice?

Yeah, my d/l rate is rotten (80 KB/s). How do I improve this? I tried using btlaunchmany once before (recently for overclockix) and had a much faster rate.

Is it just bogged-down because everyone is using it right now? I thought the whole idea behind bittorrent was efficiency increased as the number of clients....

BTW, what does the following mean?

./KNOPPIX_V3.4-2004-05-04-EN: Spd: 87.6 KB/19.2 KB Tot: 63.2 MB/45.0 MB [4:09:56 6%]

Does this really mean what I think it does? Is it that I'm only getting 87.6KB/s and have received only 63.2MB of the file and have to wait over 4 hours to finish at this rate? Tell me I'm reading this wrong!

(7 connections)

CD burned few seconds ago..... i can't wait more time... :P

Ok so I've downloaded 3.4 and did a hard drive install after booting with the knoppix26 option. a uname -r reveals that I'm still using the old 2.4.26 kernel, why wasn't the new kernel installed? More importantly, how do I install it again with the new kernel?

I've tried installing it twice using "knoppix26" to boot, after getting into the live environment I did a uname -a and it indeed said I was running the 2.6.5 kernel. However after using "knoppix-installer" and using the beginner mode hardware detection which is a new addition that redetects all hardware each reboot yet everything else is the same (not a knoppix style install). after booting into my installed system uname -a says I'm using 2.4.26

Could it be that using the beginner mode is messing it up? I might try installing it debian style but I think you get the most flexibiliy from the beginner mode.

I really appreciate all the work the developers have done and the helpfulness of these forums thanks all of you.

Yes it is! Slashdot ( http://slashdot.org ) found out about the release. Look at the number of leachers on the tracker ( 2125 and growing as of this post ). <sarcasm>Good thing there are only 251 seeders!</sarcasm>

If you see NPTL .... then it does. NPTL seems to help quite a bt in the overal performance of Gentoo on my laptop, so I might try to add it in to the 3.4 cd if it doesn't have it.

I have been getting about 150 KB/s average on the original bittorrent link. Of course it took me about 45mins to figure out how to use BT.

I was getting about 120 KB/s, but now its really about 30. I'm thinking of going back to BT.

Well I'm confused.

At boot you should have a lilo boot menu, where you can choose one of the available kernel, which worked for me ...

I finally installed it. I had the iso when i was using the 3.4 remaster and for some reason it froze when i clicked on my cd device to mount it and screwed up my hd (it checked it and said some stuff and i got confused), so i installed 98 downloaded the new 3.4 installed and everything is cool. Hope it doesnt freeze when i try to mount it again......

Not to be a PITA, but where is the source code? I would really like to look at the new GPRS-scripts and the new hardware detection for my own Live-cd ViruX (Shameless plug) and since i only got 56k-modem right now i would rather not download the whole thing. I can't find anything new at http://developer.linuxtag.net/knoppix/sources/, is there a new site for the source or will it be updated soon?

Grabbed the 3.4 iso from planetmirror and the md5sum worked out as:

So my question is. Is the .md5 wrong, is my .iso corrupted, or has the iso been tampered with?

Will there be a boot.img file available somewhere? There wasn't one on the CD. I tried using images from Knoppix 3.3 and the CeBit 3.4 version, and those would boot the overall CD but not all the hardware recognition... If anyone knows where I can get an image file to boot from a floppy, please let me know. Thanks.

knoppix26 Segmentation Fault

Has anyone else seen a Segmentation Fault when probing megaraid.o while booting into knoppix26? I'm running a Pentium 4 with an ASUS P4P800 motherboard.
