Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 21:02

I have installed Knoppix on a PCMCIA TOSHIBA HD 5.0Gb ... installation took a while but went fine ... the thing is that it doesn't boot .... this is the message i receive:
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-33, errno = 2
VFS: cannot open root device "2102" or 21:02
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel Panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 21:02

Does anyone knows how to solved this problem ...i checked fstab and the root is /dev/hde.

yea, i have a toshiba laptop and i get the 'unable to mount toot fs on ...' problem too... anyone?
