Problems with 2004-05-17 version and always with 2.6.x

Major apologies up front for the length of this post. I've been living with this problem for a long time, and have finally broken down in an effort to get outside help in fixing this...

I have a new Sager NP8890 laptop, which is maxed out with a high-end config. 3.4ghz Intel P4 with Hyperthreading on (so it appears to be an SMP with 2 cpus). 2GB ram. 2 60GB disks, each at 7200 rpm. DVD+-RW. Radeon 9600 with 128MB ram, running at 1600x1200. There is a Promise 20265 IDE controller capable of RAID, but I have RAID turned off, and the two drives are separately accessible as /dev/hde and /dev/hdg.

OK, enough of a background...

I am currently running /dev/hde with a hard-disk install of Knoppix3.3, kernel 2.4.24-xfs. It is working great (thank you for this amazing piece of software!). As nice as the current system is, I have many reasons for wanting to upgrade to a 2.6.x (2.6.6 of course) kernel, but even the 2.4.26 kernel in Knoppix3.4 would be win for me.

Here are a two short reasons (many others behind it). The 2.4.24 kernel doesn't recognize my 802.11a WiFi cards, but the 2.4.26 kernel does. I have a treo 600 phone, and I'm hoping that with a 2.6.6 kernel, I'll be able to get the networking to Sprint to work more stably than it does in 2.4.24, but that might be wishful thinking.

Now to the problems...

The most severe problem is that there's something strange about the about the system (I'm guessing it's the Promise controller, but I have no proof of that), whereby if I put the system under load (in particular, disk load), then it will freeze. This does _not_ happen with the 2.4.22-xfs Knoppix kernel, nor with the 2.4.26 Knoppix3.4 kernel. However, it happens with all of the 2.6.x kernels on all three Knoppix3.4 releases so far, as well as any kernel I try to build by hand, or download with apt-get from a debian mirror.

This is very frustrating to me, because while the current system is stable, I can't take advantage of some newer things, because the newer kernels don't work, and I can't find the right combination of configs to build one myself.

To provoke the problem, I grab "dbench" via apt-get. If I torture the system with a "dbench 100'", it will _always_ freeze (have to hard-power-down). The two Knoppix 2.4.x kernels both complete without a problem. dbench with 100 clients really tortures the system, primarily on disk io (obviously), but it also puts an incredible load on the cpu, raising the load to over 100 at the peak. That's why I can't be sure it's an IDE controller driver issue, or a hyperthreading smp one, etc...

Next, to the specific subject line of this post. The May 10th release of Knoppix3.4 worked well for me (on my second, test disk), and recognized my Aetheros-based WiFi card. The May 17th release recognizes the card, and even configures ath0, but no combination of any iwconfig commands gets it to find my AP, as the device address always shows up as FF:FF:FF:FF. To repeat, this problem was introduced in the latest release, as it worked in the 5/10 release a week ago.

It's not just a madwifi problem. If I put in an orinoco card (80211.b), or a Cisco Aironet 340 (80211.b as well), then those cards aren't even recognized by the 5/17 release. Both work out of the box on the 2.4.24-xfs kernel, and worked on the 5/10 release as well... With the Aironet card, the problem can also be seen physically, as the activity light is on solid orange all the time, but the normally blinking green status light is always off... Seems like a driver problem, but I don't know what I'm talking about, so you can safely ignore the hint

Another problem, that may not be a "real" problem, since I found a workaround, but it surprised me nonetheless...

I have used my built-in DVV+-RW quite a number of times, without problem. I have written to it using cdrecord-prodvd (and cdrecord alone when just using a CD-R or CD-RW). After I installed Knoppix3.4 to the second drive, I allowed it to change me over from LILO to GRUB, so that I could easily boot either disk (manually if necessary). After switching to GRUB, I was no longer able to write to the DVD drive. I got errors stating that "/dev/pg*" could not be found.

The workaround was to go into the grub menu.lst, and add "hdc=scsi" into the boot string. This was placed in by default with the Knoppix3.3 install in lilo, but I've accessed the DVD drive with alternate boot lines that didn't contain it either. I don't know if this is in any way a clue as to other potential problems in Knoppix3.4...

One other thing to mention, though I haven't done enough to determine whether this is really a problem or not. Only tested this under Knoppix3.3, kernel 2.4.24-xfs. I attached a Firewire drive after the system was booted. The drive is formatted for Windows, and has my backups on it from my old laptop. I expected the drive to be auto-recognized by firewire, but it wasn't. I couldn't figure out (quickly) what else to try, so I temporarily gave up. Like I said, this might not be a problem, and perhaps I simply don't know how to enable the hotplug part, or I need to have it plugged in while I boot, etc., none of which I have had a chance to test yet...

Another thing to mention ,which isn't a problem either. The touchpad is auto-recognized in the 2.4.x kernels, and tapping is enabled by default. The 2.6.x kernels don't behave the same way, and the touchpad behaves like a mouse, but tapping is turned off by default. That may be by design, but in case it's not, I thought it might be worth mentioning.

Another weird thing, that is probably due 100% to my lack of understanding of how to do this correctly. When I boot with a wireless card in, I have to configure the card by hand (after boot). I know I can do it in /etc/interfaces, but I haven't gotten that to work yet. On a fresh Knoppix hard disk install, there is no "dhclient" program, and the newer 3.4 only installs dhcpd3, which doesn't seem to have a client mode. So, I have had to boot into 3.3, chroot into 3.4, apt-get install dhclient, then reboot in order to set the card up manually. PITA, but at least it works

Whew. I am sure there are a number of other problems that I've struggled with in the past few weeks, but this is what I remember off the top of my head. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, in particular toward pinning down the _freezeing_ problem that I can always provoke with dbench, under 2.6.x kernels.

Thank you very much for this tip. Unfortunately, since I can't run the 2.6 kernel yet, I won't be able to take advantage of it until that changes.

For the moment, I was able to build a 2.4.26 kernel from the 3.4 CD, using the config file shipped with that kernel, so I am at least on a current 2.4 kernel...

Still waiting for an eventual upgrade, but no longer "anxious"

Hello,

Knoppix 3.2 (2003-04-15) works, but the same PC has problems with 3.4 (2004-05-17). I can make 3.4 load by adding "noagp" and/or "nodma" to my normal startup string "knoppix lang=us screen=800x600". Perhaps there is a problem with an update to the driver for my video board ??

Knoppix26 (part of knoppix 3.4) does not load at all. Message: "Can't find knoppix filesystem, sorry. Dropping you to a (very limited) shell."
