Is Knoppix decompressed or not after hdd installation?
Not if you use the so-called "poor man install". Yes otherwise, effectively leaving you with some debian variant. How far it deviates from vanilla debian depends on your install mode (beginner vs debian...).

It is - and will require around 4 Gb HD space.
