/cdrom /cdrom1, can not be mounted!

hi i installed knoppix 3.4 in the hard drive, using the /cdrom1.
apparently now i can not mount the /cdrom and /cdrom1. this is the most strange thing i have seen. here is my fstab:
    # /etc/fstab: filesystem table.
    #
    # filesystem mountpoint type options dump pass
    /dev/hda5 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1

    proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
    /dev/fd0 /floppy vfat defaults,user,noauto,showexec,umask=022 0 0
    usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs defaults 0 0
    sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
    /dev/cdrom /cdrom iso9660 defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto 0 0
    /dev/cdrom1 /cdrom1 iso9660 defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto 0 0
    /dev/dvd /dvd iso9660 defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto 0 0
    /dev/cdaudio /cdaudio iso9660 defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto 0 0
    # Added by KNOPPIX
    /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1 ntfs noauto,users,exec,ro,umask=000 0 0
    # Added by KNOPPIX
    /dev/hda6 none swap defaults 0 0
    # Added by KNOPPIX
    /dev/hda7 /mnt/hda7 ext3 noauto,users,exec 0 0
    # Added by KNOPPIX
    /dev/hdb1 /mnt/hdb1 vfat noauto,users,exec,umask=000 0 0
    # Added by KNOPPIX
    /dev/hdb5 /mnt/hdb5 vfat noauto,users,exec,umask=000 0 0

i was going to post about a similar problem myself

ive been watching a dvd and copying files all morning, and suddenly, one of the cdroms stops working....so i reboot, and now the cdrom AND the dvd burner dont work

    heres my fstab

    ----------------------
    # /etc/fstab: filesystem table.
    #
    # filesystem mountpoint type options dump pass
    /dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1

    /dev/fd0 /floppy vfat defaults,user,noauto,showexec,umask=022 0 0
    usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs defaults 0 0
    sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
    /dev/cdrom /cdrom iso9660 defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto 0 0
    /dev/cdrom1 /cdrom1 iso9660 defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto 0 0
    /dev/dvd /dvd iso9660 defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto 0 0
    /dev/cdaudio /cdaudio iso9660 defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto 0 0
    /dev/cdrom1 /mnt/auto/cdrom1 auto users,noauto,exec,ro 0 0
    # Added by KNOPPIX
    /dev/hda5 none swap defaults 0 0

    /dev/hda7 /mnt/hda7 ntfs noauto,users,exec,ro,umask=000 0 0
    # Added by KNOPPIX
    /dev/hda8 /mnt/hda8 vfat noauto,users,exec,umask=000 0 0

    ----------------------------------------

i had this happen on a previous install thinking i had messed it up myself trying to fix things, but this is bizarre, what causes this and how can it be fixed?

cd to your /mnt directory and check that your /cdrom and /cdrom1 are not symlinks. I had this problem after the hd install. Deleting and making new directory worked great. The fstab looks good to me, but, I am a newb also.

If you're trying to mount them using the desktop icons, try deleting those icons and creating new ones. (right-click in desktop, Create new, device, cd-rom device).

did you just delete the symlinks and do

    mkdir cdrom
    mkdir cdrom1

what then? how to make the new directories act as the dvd and cdrom?

    <--- more n00b

none of this is making much sense to me, but its definitely annoying.

i dont know where my optical drives *should* be on this sytem to being with, perhaps if i did i could find out if they are and mount them myself. as it is.....ill just pretend theyre non existant, and ask "how do i add an optical drive?"
