New harddisk - how to get going use knoppix cd?

I just bought a new hd and boot on a knoppix cd to format and partion it, BUT

None of the tools fdisk, cfdisk etc can see the drive. Its the only hd in the system so I
expect it to be named hda. But its not there even that bios can see it and
if I boot on a win98 bootdisk, it can see it too.

So what are a completly new hd called or how to I format it the first time??

Should I try mkfs on the entire disk or what tool to use?

Sorry but that means nothing. This isn't wimpdows! The name of the drive is dependent on its location on the bus.

primary master - /dev/hda
primary slave - /dev/hdb
secondary master - /dev/hdc
secondary slave - /dev/hdd

You could find it like so:
dmesg|grep hd

No use cfdisk. Make partitions first then format them however you like.

Ahh! Thats useful info. So a CDROM as secondary slave is actually
known to the system as /dev/hdd ?

When I start cfdisk it says Fatal error Cannot open disk drive and quites.

If I boot on win98 disk and use fdisk to make a primary dos partion it can then
see it, but not when its completely new.

So My quiestion is:

With a brand new unformattet hddisk sitting on primary master,
what command would I use to make cfdisk able to see it?

cfdisk /dev/hda gives a
Fatal error Could not open disk.

fdisk can't see it either.

So what is the trick? It is possible to use a knoppix cd and no bootdisk to
setup a brand new hd, right?

This is probably a stupid reply to your issue, but, I want to ensure the "easy" answer is covered here...

You are running cfdisk from a Konsole ( the little TV screen icon along the bottom of the screen ) and you are doing cfdisk as root right ???

You can not run cfdisk as a knoppix user, make your knoppix konsole into root, and then try the cfdisk again. ( that is, if you have not been doing it as root )

It sounds like your drive isn't at /dev/hda. Try with the other drive names just to be sure.

cfdisk /dev/hdb
cfdisk /dev/hdc
cfdisk /dev/hdd

It should work. It does for me.

Well, actually it was not stupid at all as it was the problem....

I didn't su before I tried cfdisk...

Didn't think one moment the fatal error had
anything to do with user rights/roles

DOH! to me...

So for the record, if I run system tools as knoppix (limited) user, they will not tell
me that I don't have the rights, but simple show an error?

On the positive side, I will never forget it again

Some of the "tools" will tell you that you don't have access/permission rights, or that you need to run the "tool" as root, or a Administrator, but, I remember the cfdisk from way back - I've done the same mistake - and thought, hmmmmm, lets not take months working on this, if it may be something as simple as this.... Thats all.

a big note saying "SU ME!" placed above my linuxbox.

Im now on part 2 where I dump the partiontable as text
and try to recreate it on another hd using scripts.

I really hope partimage can be scripted.

Sorry to hear that not many females in Denmark are advid computer geeks, considering the "states", I am but one in many, though haven't heard of many in this forum... Funny, never thought that the "Ms" could have been something else, especially with my disstaste of Microsoft, I would never have thought the Ms could have stood for M$, and thus, my sig would have actually been "M$ Cuddles" - yuck, my nic and that word, in the same sentence ! ( now I got to go wash my mouth out, bad taste in my mouth now... )

Well, most of us would be happy if they just had a little interrest in computers
so forget about advid. And a geek girl. Sure.
We had ONE way back in school. Only one I ever saw.
She surely got a lot of attention.
On the school, one could also study marketing
and it was all blond girls with huge atttributes
but at parties all the men was standing around
this skinny girl talking computers.
Life can be wierd.
