thanks for the link, i read it thoroughly and tried this first... replaced old cd-rom line in /etc/fstab with this:

/dev/sr0 /cdrom iso9660 defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto 0 0

it worked like a charm !

Of course i had to delete the cd-rom icon on the desktop and create a new one.. that was easy..

now it works perfectly again... I WONDER WHY AND HOW IT GOT MESSED UP ! ????
