Problems with start

I have been trying to install Knoppix V3.7 on my Sharp Actius AV-18. Have Windows XP Professional on it.
At first i would see only a blank screen but i tried this:
'knoppix noscsi acpi=off noapm'
This seemed to work but now all i have is a gray screen (not blank) with a big 'X' in the center and
nothing seems to be happening (have been seeing this X for about an hour now).
Can someone suggest a solution ?
Should i try Debian or SuseLinux or something else ?

Tough to say... have you messed with the framebuffer cheatcodes?
the one that works best on my laptop is fb1024x768
