ath_pci vs snd_atiipxp

I am running knoppix on a computer that require snd_atiixp for sound
and ath_pci for wifi.
So far Knoppix is the only distro which supports both,
but not at the same time, snd_atiixp is only for the 2.6 kernel
and ath_pci is only for the 2.4 kernel.
Does anyone know the reason for this?
Seems I either need to install madwifi as a 2.6 module or upgrade alsa for 2.4.
I have looked on the internet and both alsa and madwifi seem a little idionsyncratic to install.
Any suggestions on the simplest way to get both at the same time?
Does one of the derived distros already do this?
