boot into customized kernel before creating compressed fs?

There is no way to test a remaster by booting into it BEFORE creating the compressed filesystem, is there?

Per the remastering FAQ, after the stage where you chroot and apt-get, you have to do "mkisofs" before you can follow the tip further down on the screen entitled "Tip, test cd-image without recording cd"

I'm talking about booting INTO the remaster, not just chrooting to it...
