Type groups as user to check if you're in the floppy group, if not: adduser benw floppy , logout&login again for the change to take effect.
Your /floppy should look like:
drwxr-xr-x 2 root floppy 4096 Dec 11 2003 floppy
If not:
chmod 755 /floppy
chgrp floppy /floppy
