I'm looking to try alternatives (simpler ones) to the KDE desktop. Will the alternative window managers show gui apps like T-bird, or do I have to choose between KDE/Gnome?

Is there an easy way to switch KDE/Gnome on a HD install? Or would that involve a substantial re-build?
