Sound problem

Hi, when i use xmms or multimedia programs, they say that my sound card is being used, although nothing is played and /dev/dsp is busy.

This is the message that i get :

Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Device or resource busy)

chmod 777 /dev/dsp

That didn't work sorry. Somebody told me to restart the sound server. Can somebody tell me how exactly am I going to do this?

I had the same problem where knoppix didn't automagically detect my sound card and I had to do things by hand. It was a PIA (you can figure it out) to get everything working, but the results are posted here:

You will probably have to figure out the correct modules (specific to your card) for this subset

insmod ad1848
insmod uart401
insmod cs4232 io=0x530 irq=5 dma=1

but i (eventually) found all my info by refining my google searches in google groups.
