Spell checking

Ispell seems to be set up to check any window I'm typing in (like this one) and turning mis-spelled words red without being asked. This happens only sometimes in my Pan news-reader though. What could cause this to not work in some apps some of the time? It also has a problem with personal word lists, there are two files .spell_default and .aspell.en.pws and often words that I mark to be added don't get added to either.

How is this supposed to work? Any tips for getting the operation of ispell/aspell cleaned up and consistent across different apps?

As a flow-up (sorry!) I've noticed that this *doesn't* work if I start Pan from a command line prompt, but *does* work (i.e. the reply window shows all mis-spelled words in red) if I start Pan from a menu item in the KDE button menu (whatever it's called in KDE).

What's that all about?
