remaster with greeter login and passwords?

Hello,

I have an interest in remastering a knoppix CD with a graphical greeter and passwords preset in the /etc/passwd file for a number of users, including root. I can't seem to figure this out.

Also I have a less urgent desire to switch the desktop to gnome, and use their greeter and also the /etc/passwd file. This is not as important as the above, I can stick with KDE if the gnome is too much of a problem.

So far I have (kind of) been able to get this working by installing the regular debian gnome packages, and changing the /etc/sysconfig/desktop entry, but the greeter is not authenticating properly, and something appears to be timing out on hostname lookups or ??? In other words, I'm dead in the water right now. It kind of looks like the MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 id's do not match what the gdm is after, like something is missing ahead of the ":" (if that makes sense).

Thanks in advance for help on any of this. Mostly I just want to get a graphical greeter and passwds working.

well, no one is replying, so I guess i'll try the unconfirmed methods i've seen in the archives.

this is depressing...it seems like an obvious, natural thing to add to knoppix but there is little solid information on howto add a greeter and passwds.

i haven't been around for a while and probably won't be since i've been pulled from my current project to another...but...

i did this with my windows rescue cd knoppix remaster...

i installed gnome and have gdm coming up on boot asking for a username and password...it also successfully goes into the gui...

at first i had that same mitmagic cookie error...turns out to be about the Xauth security...since my CD is up only temporarily i figured i'd add the following command to the /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default script...

xhost +

this makes your X session insecure but I figured this isn't an environment that is up for very long so it "shouldn't" matter...we'll see

as for the users...i enter them in from the config.tbz file via a script...really round about but it gets the job done at this point...you could also enter in new users and passwords then remaster that into your cd...

i hope i didn't confuse you about this...i'll watch the thread for your response...
