Little help here

I am new to Knoppix, I have been messing around with it trying to learn all the shell commands and everything. I was just wondering if you can actually run programs from the shell, or what you can do from the shell period. Oh yeah, and how do you install Knoppix to your pc?

control alt F2. Then type passwd to change the system password. I do this just to makr sure I have permission to proceed. At the prompt type su, then enter the password. knoppix-installer <---- is what the command is to start the knoppix installer. Follow through to get familiar with it, configure it first, then you have the coice to proceed to start the installation or quit the installer. Make sure you install the bootloader to the mbr.

you asked what one can do from the comandline,
I frequently do these. (in paranthesis is programes i have used)

surf the net (elinks, lynx, w3m)
ftp (ncftp, lftp, ftp)
mail (mailx, mutt, pine)
ICQ (centericq (centericq works with, yahoo, jabber, msn, ICQ, irc and a few more))
irc (centericq, BitchX, EPIC)
manage my files (mc, and the normal commands: rm, mv, cp, mkdir...)
write texts, (elvis, vim, nano, mcedit, vi, antiword, joe)
listen to music (mixers: aumix, alsamixer. players, mpg321, aplay)
watch films (aaxine, mplayer)
burn CD's and DVD's (mkisofs, cdrecord, CDRDAO, cdparanoia, cdda2wav, dvd+rw-tools...).
there are quite a few games.
and ofcourse run servers (proftpd, sshd, apache, sendmail...)

as you can see there is not much you can NOT do.

Just a PS dvd+rw-tools works for all dvd-formats, name is misleading.

Correct. In fact, alot of programs are just GUI wrappers around CLI programs.

K3B to name one. that is a frontend to some of the (iirc all) programs i mentioned for burning cd's and DVD's
