Newbie with questions!

I have a HP ZE4400 (AMD) laptop. It will only boot with the failsafe switch. Looking around a bit I read somewhere that it might be SCSI, PCMCIA, or USB causing the problems. What's the exact command line to exclude these things? What else might it be?

My next question is can I use an external USB drive with Knoppix?
