Appeared to be simple :-)
"insmod ehci-hcd" resolved it on kernel 2.4.
Will try it on 2.6 later.
I like this self-service board 
Still, I am wondering why sometimes I need to do this and sometimes it just works by default? I have another laptop where USB was available without any additional commands...
