Sounds like an issue, but it really depends on choices you make.

The newer versions of Knoppix are more agressive in turning on features (like DMA) that used to be off in older versions. I have a notebook that had a similar priblem, I found that I had to use a combination of two cheat codes (noscsi and acpi=off in that case). I also have an older desktop that was getting errors like mad on a known good CD, could not start X. In that case the NODMA cheat code solved everything. I don't know of any good way to find what combination of cheat codes you might need except trial and error.
