Knoppix do comes with kernel source and kernel header (last time I check in knoppix 3.4), but only for kernel 2.4.
That's why I suggest him to boot using kernel 2.4 and install that driver.

Yes it is much easier to install nvidia driver using kanotix......I use kanotix too..
