just for the records:
Knoppix 3.7 recognized an U.S. Robotics 56k Voice Faxmodem attached to a serial port as did efax-gtk-2.0.5a.

Sending faxes is no problem. Receiving faxes did not work until I changed
the efax-gtk - Settings - Modem - Modem class option from (default) "Auto" to "Class 2.0" explicitly.
