wireless trouble

ok iam able to get my wireless card to work DWL-122 dlink usb but when i go in and try to make changes to it essid key or any thing it tells me
error for wireless request "set esside" (8b1a)
set failed on device wlan0 ; operation not supported.

any help would be great thanks.

are you doing the command #]iwconfig wlan0 essid "whatever"

you need to be root to do this. type su. then run that command

ok i tried the su iwconfig wlan0 essid linksys
UNKNOW ID: IWCONFIG

also iam running knoppix 3.7 and even when i do the GUI and try to set the settings no luck they stay default

su is folowed by a username==> su username.
sudo on the other hand is folowed by a comand.==>sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid linksys

iam still not getting it sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid linksys

it still states set failed on device wlan0 operation not supported

is wlan0 present in the output of ifconfig?

when i type in ifconfig i get
also iam able to change my IP: but when i try to change the mode:ad-hoc or encryption any of that it wont let me

when you set iwconfig wlan0 essid linksys does it say operation failed or when you do pump -i wlan0. when i do iwconfig wlan0 it normaly will show the ap at first but when i try set the encryption key it fails on me and the ap will be gone and pump -i wlan0 fails
