According to my google search which offered this link http://jclement.ca/blog/2004-08-09T08_34_37.html, it looks like you need to use gphoto2 http://www.gphoto.org/.

I use flphoto which is a frontend to gphoto2. There may be a .deb for it but I couldn't find it so I converted an rpm with alien. There is also a 'camera:/' protocol available for konqueror, It is part of kde's kamera package.
