Cannot get more than 640x480 Intel 830M Dell Inspiron 2600

I have Knoppix 3.7 and I tried it on a Dell Inspiron 2600 laptop, which has an Intel 830M Graphics Controller video card, BIOS version 2829, 32 MB of RAM and chipset Intel 82830M and the monitor has a refresh rate of 60 Hz. At the beginning, at the boot process I got stuck at the "Probing SCSI... aic7xxx.o". I reviewed this forum and I found that using the switch "noscsi", I was able to continue the booting process. Then, I got tuck at the
"Starting X11...[drm: drm_init] *ERROR* Cannot initialize the agpart module
Retrying with Server XFree86 (vesa)
Retrying with Server XFree86 (fbdev)
Error: No suitable X-Server foud for your card"
I searched in this forum again and I found that using the switch "xserver=XF86_SVGA" I was able to get into graphic mode, but only at 640x480 of screen resolution.
I also had the "You passed an undefined mode number", but also thanks to this forum I added the "vga=normal" switch and I get rid of it.
However, even tough I searched in this forum for problems with similar video cards and similar laptops, I can't get more than 640x480 of screen resolution, which is not practical and I get the "Starting X11...[drm: drm_init] *ERROR* Cannot initialize the agpart module" error. I have already tried all the following switches (one by one):

I tried to boot in expert and failsafe mode, but when at the boot prompt I entered "knoppix expert" and "knoppix failsafe" (one at a time), the boot process was like the normal process (I noticed no difference).
I also booted with "knoppix 2", edited the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file by using the vi editor, removed all the "modeline" lines of the file and adjusted the horizontal freq. to 28-48 and entered a "startx", but I got the error in the following var/log/XFree86.0.log file:

I ran out of ideas to make Knoppix grahpic mode boot in at least 800x600 resolution. I am also a Knoppix, Linux and Unix beginner. Does anybody have any ideas?

in trying to set video modes,
i found myself at the tty1 screen with no KDE desktop on tty7

simple fix was to log in as root
and then
kdm
(i think)

the tty7 then popped up fine.
not sure what was wrong.....
I'm trying to get a different text mode screen size on tty1 at the moment too
