How to uninstall apps?

I did a search on this forum and looked through the faqs. Everyone seems to be concerned with adding software to the HD install. But is there a way to remove a given program?

Say I want to add Firefox and Thunderbird and want to get rid of the Mozilla Suite. Does apt-get remove handle that?

yes.
use apt-get remove --purge <package>
the --purge makes it also remove the config files
